New York, NY - Despite being in the midst of conference play, the College of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team carved out time to take on city rival Hunter College in a non-conference double header on Wednesday evening. Despite playing tough throughout, the Dolphins dropped both contests, first by the score of 2-0, with the second game finishing with the score of 11-2.
The first game was a pitchers' duel between the Dolphins and Hawks, with a total of eight hits allowed between both clubs. Despite picking up the loss,
Hannah Thompson had an impressive game on the mound for CMSV. The junior threw for all seven innings, allowing just five hits, one walk and zero earned runs while striking out 10 batters along the way. Unfortunately, two timely hits in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the difference in the game.
Sophia Herrera,
Alanna Alioto-Reyes and
Alexa Moley were the only three Dolphins to generate hits against the Hawks.
Unlike game one, the second contest was all Hunter College. The game did start on the right foot for the Dolphins, as pitcher
Kayla Pagano gave her team an early one run lead when she drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning. After the Hawks responded with two runs of their own in the top of the second,
Nicole Schweit tied things up with a solo home run to nod things up at two. But from there, it was all Hunter, as they rattled off nine unanswered runs from the third inning on, ultimately defeating the Dolphins handedly. Despite the loss, both Schweit and
Katie Moos impressed with two hits apiece.
CMSV will return to action quickly when they take on Yeshiva University in a conference double header on Thursday.
