Patchogue, NY - After weather conditions put a halt to their double header over the weekend, the College of Mount Saint Vincent traveled to out east on Monday to take on St. Joseph's College - Long Island - the unanimous top pick in the Skyline Conference preseason poll - on Monday evening. In what has become a theme this season, the Dolphins played strong throughout, taking one from the Golden Eagles to bring their overall record in 2019 to 6-6 while sporting an impressive 3-1 mark in conference play.
The game one contest saw the Golden Eagles emerge victorious in a strong fashion, as they went on to defeat the Dolphins by the score of 7-0. CMSV was only able to muster up five total hits - four of which from the freshmen duo of
Jake Blinstrub and
Michael Grisanti. The defense proved to be an issue, with the pitching trio of
Amir Nitowski,
Tyler Reyes and
Humberto Vela only giving up three earned runs in the nine inning affair. Offensively, the Dolphins left six runners on base, which didn't help their cause, either.
Game two, however, was a completely different story. The Dolphins got on the board early when junior
Zachary Saunders singled in Blinstrub in the first inning, giving his team a one run edge. The run support continued in the following inning when Blinstrub added an RBI to his stat sheet when he brought in
Pedro Fortoso. Later on in the fifth, Fortoso had a two RBI single, driving in
Matt Albert and
Eric Zimmermann, resulting in a four run lead. The final three runs that crossed the plate were merely for insurance purposes, as senior
Jeremy Glazer had a standout performance on the hill. The hurler pitched a complete game shutout, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out four along the way.
After picking up a huge win, CMSV now sets their sights on Bard College, where they'll travel tomorrow to take on the Raptors at their home field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
