Baseball Sweeps Old Westbury In Skyline Conference Opener

Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's baseball team opened Skyline Conference play on Sunday afternoon. The Dolphins were impressive through two tight contests, beating the Panthers in a pair of last inning heroics by the score of 6-5 and 2-1, respectively.

In game one, freshman Pete Sanderson took the mound and went seven strong innings, allowing just three earned runs while striking out four along the way. Sophomore standout Matt DiNorcia and junior Zachary Saunders led the way with two hits apiece while catcher Matt Albert led the way with two RBI. The Dolphins were resilient all game long; after five, they were down five runs but mounted a comeback over the final four innings of play. Jake Blinstrub, DiNorcia and Anthony Nocero all drove in runs in the seventh, cutting Old Westbury's lead to two. In the bottom of the ninth, Eric Zimmermann had a pinch-hit RBI sac fly, bringing CMSV within one. Albert was the hero of the first contest, as his two RBI single to center field gave his team the victory. Nick Saranczak came in for the final two innings of play, keeping Old Westbury scoreless.

Game two was the definition of a pitchers' duel, with Tommy Sharfetz and Pedro Fortoso combining for eight innings while striking out four and allowing just one run total. The combination of Nocero and Michael Grisanti impressed with four total hits. Once again it was Zimmermann who stepped up to the plate when it mattered most, as his RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be the game winner.

The Dolphins will look to keep the momentum going into Monday when they take on St. Joseph's College-Long Island in a makeup game from Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 PM.
