New Haven, CT - After struggling in the season opener against Ramapo College, the College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's lacrosse team hit the road once again, this time traveling to Connecticut to take on Albertus Magnus. Unlike the first contest, the Dolphins impressed throughout the entirety of the game as they earned their first victory of 2019 by the score of 11-7.
After a defensive battle commenced over the opening minutes of the game,
Morgan Pavlik broke the scoring drought with a goal in the 21st minute, giving the Dolphins an early 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later, it was
Veronica Sevivas' turn, as she potted her first goal of the season, giving her team a two-point edge. While the Falcons did respond with two goals of their own, another Pavlik goal off an assist from
Amy Cohen helped CMSV go into the locker room with the lead.
The Dolphins were firing on all cylinders in the second half, with the team rattling off four goals before Albertus Magnus could get back on the board. The scoring opened with
Emma Dell'Aquila, who scored off a strong pass from
Shannon Dalton. Minutes later, Dalton herself joined the stat sheet with a goal of her own, extending the Dolphins' lead to three goals. From there, both Pavlik and
Caitlin Elia eached scored in a woman advantage situation, bringing the score to 7-2. The Falcons, however, weren't out of it just yet, as Albertus Magnus was able to score three straight, cutting the CMSV's lead to two. But that was as close as they would get for the rest of the afternoon, as Pavlik scored one more time while Elia poured in three additional goals over the span of five minutes, which ended up being the final tally for the Dolphins.
For CMSV, the duo of Pavlik and Elia combined for eight of the team's 11 goals, an impressive feat in its own right. Sevivas paced her team in assists with two and freshman
Sophia Raccolin led the way with three ground balls. Elia also had a team-high eight draw controls while
Allyson Weakliem made nine saves.
After securing their first win, the Dolphins will look to keep their streak intact. They'll play host - for the first time this season - to Plattsburgh State on March 20.
