Riverdale, NY - The Dolphins were back in action on a snowy Sunday for tri-match right on their home court at the Peter Jay Sharp Center, where they would be taking on Wentworth Institute of Technology and SUNY Poly. CMSV was looking to snap their current three game skid and gain some momentum going into conference play. After a day of hard play, the Dolphins came up short in both matches.
The first game of the day saw CMSV take on the Leopards of WIT. Wentworth, who was coming off an impressive five set loss to the #14 team in the country, came ready to play. The Leopards jumped all over the Dolphins and cruised to a 25-11 first set victory.
Jose Estrella was the bright spot for the Dolphins, registering two kills in the frame. The second set was almost identical to the first, as Wentworth would start on a 11-1 run and never look back as they went on to win the set 25-6. Through two sets of play
Brendan Ryan was playing some solid defense with six digs. Ryan also got in on the offensive side, registering a kill. The same story continued during the third and final set of the first match of the day as Wentworth dominated and won the set 25-9.
After a tough 3-0 loss to WIT, SUNY Poly came out of the gates strong against the Dolphins in the final match of the afternoon. Despite an early back and forth affair – one that saw CMSV lead by three at one point – the Wildcats eventually returned to form, going on a 14-3 run to take the first set victory. The Wildcats jumped out to an early 7-0 advantage, with the Dolphins failing to make the opponents look back on their lead. As a whole, CMSV dropped set two by the score of 25-10. The Dolphins did their best to give their opponents a tough time to close out the game, but in the end, SUNY Poly did just enough to overcome the home squad, as CMSV ultimately fell to the Wildcats by the score of 25-18. Estrella led the way with five kills while Ryan,
Christian Santiago and
Dorian Robinson combined for eight of their own.
Padelis Astrinidis registered nine assists and
Tim Donnelly had 10 digs.
After receiving a week long break, the Dolphins will return to action in similar fashion, as they'll host a tri-match against local rivals Lehman College and Medgar Evers College.
