Riverdale, N.Y. - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's basketball team returned home after winning their second straight Skyline contest against the St. Joseph's College Long Island Golden Eagles on Saturday. With their eyes set on a third consecutive win, they took on conference powerhouse USMMA for the second time this season.
Despite going up against a Mariners team that has won 17 of 19 total games, the Dolphins held their own over the first half of play. In the first quarter, the team as a whole shot 39% from the floor while making five of six free throw attempts, keeping the game knotted up at 16. The second quarter saw the same close action, as both teams headed to the locker room tied once again, this time at 31. CMSV did a great job forcing the Mariners to put up tough shots, and that showed with USMMA's 27% field goal percentage in the second quarter.
Aria Rheams impressed in the first half with eight points and six rebounds while
Leah Pinili recorded eight points of her own to go along with two assists.
Dez Brown and
Yamilersy Reyes combined for 10 points over the first 20 minutes as well.
Despite the toughness displayed by the Dolphins, the dominant Mariners began to show their prowess and pull away in the second half. While CMSV had a superior shooting percentage, USMMA held them to just nine shots in the third quarter, resulting in a 13- point lead going into the final period of play. The dominance continued throughout the fourth, where the Mariners ultimately won by the score of 68-51. Rheams finished with an impressive 12 points and seven rebounds while Pinili paced all Dolphins with 14 points.
CMSV is now 6-14 on the season with a conference record of 5-10. They'll look to return to the win column on Senior Day when they take on Old Westbury on Saturday.
