Old Westbury, N.Y. - The CMSV women's basketball team opened up the new year by traveling to the top team in the Skyline Conference in Old Westbury on Thursday evening. Despite coming out and having a strong opening frame, a rough second quarter loomed large and the Dolphins fell by a score of 68-49.
The lady Dolphins opened up the game playing fantastic defense and holding a power house offense to just 10 points. CMSV added 10 of their own and went into the second quarter tied. Senior leader Yamilersy Reyes' energy had the Dolphins playing some of their best basketball thus far. The size and strength of Old Westbury showed in the second quarter as they got the ball inside and started to flex their muscles as they scored 12 of their 20 points in the paint and out rebounded the Dolphins 20-12 in the quarter. The Panthers took a 30-16 lead into the half.Â
As we have seen all season long, CMSV struggled in the second half - but even though the Dolphins trailed by 14, they never showed a lack of effort. The Dolphins got contributions from all over the roster in the second half. The lead grew as large as 22 and was down to 18 going into the final quarter. In the final frame, CMSV cut the lead to as little as 14 but could not overcome the big hole they were in. On a positive note, the Dolphins had four scorers in double figures: Reyes (11), Aria Rheams (12), Leah Pinlli (12) and Gabriela Goldman (10). Rheams also registered yet another double double.Â
CMSV will finally be back at home this weekend in the second game of a double header. The women will be taking on St. Joseph's Long Island at 2:30 PM in Riverdale. The Dolphins now sit at an overall record of 2-9 and a Skyline record of 1-5.Â
