Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Run Dooms Dolphins In Loss to Panthers

Riverdale, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Vincent men's basketball team suffered a heart breaking loss as they fell to Skyline Conference foe SUNY Old Westbury on the road. The Dolphins are now 3-3 in conference, with the Panthers sitting at 3-2.

During the opening half of tonight's contest, the Dolphins played near flawless basketball and had Old Westbury beat in every statistical category. CMSV out rebounded the Panthers 26-23, had nine assists compared to the Panthers' three, and only turned the ball over three times in the first half while forcing Old Westbury into five. CMSV looked locked in and ready to go in the new year. Vinny Tavella had a huge first half, scoring 11 points and bringing in eight rebounds.

In the second half, the Dolphins started out and seemed to have really found their groove. Raiquis Harris and Claudio Nmezi scored the first 15 of Mount's 17 points in second half. The two juniors had it going all night long. Thanks to them, they were able to extend their lead to 11 at 58-47. Old Westbury was not ready to go down easy at home as they went on a quick 9-2 run to pull within five. This run came to a screaming stop when senior Jason Barerra threw down a monster jam. But here came the Panthers yet again, after trading buckets for multiple possessions, two big threes got Old Westbury within two with two minutes to play. Old Westbury continued to get to the rim and draw falls and eventually knotted the game at 72. Two straight turnovers from the Dolphins down the stretch led to more free throws for the Panthers, who put the game away at the free throw line and went on to win 79-72. The free throw line was the story of the night, as Old Westbury shot 25-33 from the line while CMSV shot a mere 7-11.

Looking on the bright side of tonight's game, CMSV had four players in double figures: Harris (23), Barrera (16), Tavella (15) and Nmzei (10). The men well get right back into action this Saturday as they host St. Joseph's Long Island in the first game of a double header at 12 PM. CMSV is currently at an overall record of 4-7.
