Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dolphins Drop Non-Conference Matchup Against Rutgers-Newark

Newark, N.J. - The men's basketball team traveled to New Jersey to take on non-conference opponent Rutgers-Newark in their first game action since December 14 when they faced Mount Saint Mary. Despite a strong first half, Rutgers-Newark proved to be too much down the stretch and took over in the middle of the second half, going on to defeat the Dolphins 65-48.

During the first half of play the Dolphins and Raiders traded baskets for the opening 13 minutes of play and had the score at 19-18 CMSV with seven minutes to play in the first half. The Dolphins had an extremely balanced attack, seeing seven different players scoring baskets. At the seven-minute mark, Rutgers got hot and went on a 10-0 run over a five minute span. Rutgers took a 28-19 lead, with this run was ending by freshmen guard Kalos Evans. It seemed as if Rutgers was cruising at that point but the big shot by Evans and a three ball and pull up jumper from senior leader Jason Barrera kept the Dolphins in the game and were only trailing by seven going into the break.

The second half began just like the first half ended. An Evans jumper was followed by a Barrera three ball and the Dolphins were within six at 39-33, Rutgers-Newark answered the Evans and Barrera combo with back to back baskets, pushing the lead to 10. But Barrera took things into his own hands, scoring four straight and then finding Makai Johnson, who was fouled and hit both free throws, getting the Dolphins right back into the game at 43-39 with nine minutes left in the game. But yet again the Raiders had an answer and extended the lead to the largest of the game at 58-42. With four minutes to play, this run seemed to be the dagger and the Dolphins did not have an answer, as Rutgers continued their strong play. The Raiders went on to win the contest 65-48.  Jason Barrera ended the day with 14 points and 6 rebounds.

CMSV will look to have some short term memory as they take the court again on January 3 against conference rival Old Westbury. They will look to continue their strong conference play and start climbing the leader boards when it matters. The Dolphins now sit at an overall record of 4-6 and a Skyline Conference record of 3-2.
