Riverdale, N.Y. - After suffering a loss at the hands of New York University in their season opener on Saturday afternoon, the College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's basketball team traveled to Manhattan to take on John Jay on Tuesday evening. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, they suffered the same fate as their first contest, losing by the score of 65-54.
Unlike game one, CMSV game out strong over the first two quarters of play. Going into halftime, the Dolphins led the Bloodhounds by four points.
Aria Rheams played a tremendous first half, as she scored 10 points while pulling down six rebounds and dishing out five assists while playing in all but two minutes. She was helped by senior teammates
Yamilersy Reyes and
Kelly Oliver, who scored eight and five points, respectively. As a whole, the Dolphins shot 36% from the floor while playing strong defense by forcing seven steals.
But it was a tail of two halves for CMSV, as their strong play went undone between the third and fourth quarters. As a whole, the Dolphins went cold on offense, converting just eight of their 30 shot attempts while shooting just 23% from beyond the arc. Rheams continued to impress with seven more points while
Gabriela Goldman (six points),
Dez Brown (five points) and
Aaliyah Lyn (four points) did their best to keep their team in the game. By night's end, Rheams filled the stat sheet with 13 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and two steals while Reyes scored 11 total points off the bench.
The Dolphins won't return to the court until November 29 when they host St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn for their first Skyline Conference matchup of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
