RIVERDALE, NY - Trailing by just one goal in the closing minutes of Wednesday's contest, the College of Mount Saint Vincent women's soccer team saw its hope at a comeback fall short at Marillac Field, as FDU-Florham scored a late insurance goal to top the Dolphins, 2-0.
Kelly Gibison led the way offensively for CMSV, tallying three of the team's 11 shots. Â Emma Dell'Aquila and Alicia Forgione also added two shots for the Dolphins.
Between the pipes, Elizabeth Martin made three saves on the afternoon.
After FDU-Florham (4-1) held possession in the game's opening few minutes, the Dolphins (0-3) unleashed a flurry of offensive opportunities, all of which came close but failed to find the back of the net.
FDU-Florham broke the scoreless tie in the 16th minute, as a corner kick from Lindsey Scarmozzino resulted in a scrum in front of the CMSV net. Kristina Ragolia took possession of the 50-50 ball and chipped it home, giving the Devils the early advantage.
The Devils maintained their 1-0 lead heading into the intermission. At the break, FDU-Florham held an 8-4 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
CMSV registered the first shot of the second half off the foot of Grace Barry five minutes into the latter stanza and the two teams went back-and-forth over most of the period.
With the Dolphins pushing late in regulation, Amanda Croce sent a cross into the box for Erica Martins, who converted on the chance for her third tally of the season to put the game out of reach.
The Dolphins return to action on Saturday, playing host to Moravian College at 12 p.m.
