Dolphins Split In Skyline DH vs. USMMA

Giumarra, Kochen and Valenti smack two hits in game 1

KINGS POINT, NY - The CMSV Baseball team returned to the diamond on Sunday afternoon, traveling to Long Island to take on US Merchant Marine Academy in a Skyline Conference doubleheader.

The Dolphins won game 1 7-3 but lost 10-2 in game two putting the Mount at 7-15 overall and 3-5 in Skyline play. Both equal the totals from all of the 2016 season.

Robert Negron started and earned the win for the Dolphins, as the senior pitched 8 innings, scattering six hits while giving up three runs and striking out nine batters.

Before the senior even took the mound, the Dolphins offense put two runs on the board in the top of the 1st. Back-to-back RBI ground outs by Matthew Nesensohn and Honorio Pena gave the Mount a 2-0.

In the 4th, Michael Kochen laced a single through the left side chasing Pena home from third to make it 3-1. Then in the 6th Brandon Pasquale drove home Kochen with an RBI single to right center.

Then in the 7th, CMSV blew things open scoring three runs, taking advantage of an infield error.

In game two, Dolphins pitching surrendered 11 hits to the Mariners. Kochen started for the Mount, lasting on 2.1 innings, giving up five hits and five runs (four earned). Luis Castillo pitched 2.2 innings of relief giving up five hits and four runs (three earned). Bryan Cantero pitched the final inning for the Mount, giving up one run on one hit.

The Dolphins once again spotted their starting pitcher a run. Zachary Saunders led off with a walk and would come around to score a few batters later.

The Mount's second run came off the bat of Emanuel Giumarra who laced a single to left allowing Castillo to score cutting the lead to 4-2.

USMMA would score four runs in the 5th to put the game out of reach and earn the split.
