Softball Splits in DH vs. St. Joseph's-Brooklyn

R. Heizer shuts down Bears in G1 victory

PATCHOGUE, NY - The CMSV Softball team returned to action on Sunday afternoon, taking on St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in a Skyline Conference doubleheader, played on the campus of St. Joseph's-Long Island.

Rachel Hezier limited the Bears to 7 hits over 7 innings, in game 1,to help lead the Dolphins to a 3-2 victory. In game 2, the Dolphins came back from a 6-2 deficit, scoring 5 runs in the 6th, but lost 8-7 after the Bears scored twice in the 7th.

In game 1, R. Heizer started in the circle and went the distance for the Dolphins, limiting the Bears offense to just 7 hits and 2 earned runs over 7 innings, while striking out 6 batters. She also helped herself at the dish, going 1-for-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.

Taylor Milata provided the majority of the offense, as the freshman went 2-for-3 with 2RBIs. The Queens native put the Mount on the board in the 4th inning with an infield single allowing R. Heizer to score and tie the game at 1-1. In the 6th, she struck again, smacking a double to center field, chasing R. Heizer home, and putting CMSV ahead 3-2.

In game 2, both offense's had big innings where most of their runs were scored.

R. Heizer continued her hot hitting in her first at-bat, smacking a 2-run triple, scoring sister Mackenzie Heizer and Katie Moss to give the Mount an early 2-0 lead.

The lead would hold until the top of the 3rd when the Bears offense would explode for five runs, all coming off Dolphins starter M. Heizer. The Bears added one more run the top of the 6th to make it 6-2.

But in the Dolphins half of the 6th, the offense awoke, scoring five runs, to take a 7-6 lead. It was Milata who again provided the big blow, a bases clearing double to center field, tying the game at 6-6. The next batter Kierstyn Bourdeau drove home Milata with a double to center to give the Dolphins a 7-6 lead.

The Bears would get a lead-off double in the top of the 7th, then with one out, Paige Csikortos smashed a 2-run double to left to give her side an 8-7 advantage.

Victoria Mahoney got the Dolphins in order in the bottom of the 7th to secure the Bears 8-7 win.
