PATCHOGUE, NY - The CMSV Softball team returned to action on Thursday afternoon, traveling to Long Island to take on St. Joseph's-LI in a Skyline Conference doubleheader. The Dolphins lost a 10 inning affair, 6-5 in game one, then came back to win game two, 9-3. The Dolphins now sit, 15-9 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
The Mount broke through first, scoring three runs in the top of the 2nd. With two outs and the bases loaded,
Samantha Brook legged out an infield single, allowing
Rachel Heizer to score and make it 1-0 CMSV. The next batter,
Taylor Wittick lofted one to center and a misplay the the Golden Eagles center fielder, allowed two more Dolphin runs to score to make it 3-0.
R. Heizer started in the circle for the Dolphins and was un-hittable through 5 innings, allowing only two hits. In the 6th however, the Golden Eagles scored three runs to tie the game. Neither team was able to scratch across a run in the 7th, so they headed to extra innings, where it remained tied 3-3 into the 10th inning.
With both starting pitchers still in there for their respective teams, the offense finally awoke.
In the top of the 10th, the leadoff batter,
Rianna Laughridge, was placed on second to start the inning. She then came around to score two batters later on single to center by Wittick. Two batters later, Wittick would come around to score on a double by
Katie Moos to make it 5-3 CMSV heading to the bottom of the 10th.
The Dolphins failed to record an out in the bottom of the inning. With two runners on, SJC laced a two-run double to center to tie the game. Then after an infield error put a runner on third and no one out, the Golden Eagles walked-off with a victory thanks to a sacrifice fly to left field, to take a 6-5 victory.
In game two, CMSV wasted no time getting on the board. R. Heizer drove a double to left center, plating two runs in the top of the 1st inning.
Taylor Milata would lace a single to center allowing a run to score then the Mount added on another run thanks to an infield error to make it 4-0.
Freshman
Hannah Thompson started in the circle for the Dolphins in game two and pitched effectively, going the full 7 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out five batters.
R. Heizer and Milata struck again for the Dolphins in the 2nd inning each with an RBI single to give Thompson a 6-0 lead after 2 innings.
The Golden Eagles scratched across three runs in the fourth inning, but Milata would erase those runs by delivering again, this time in te 6th inning with a 2-run infield single to make the score 8-3. Thompson would drive a double to left center, chasing Milata home to conclude the scoring for the Dolphins.
