RIVERDALE, NY - The CMSV Women's Basketball team returned to action on Tuesday night, hosting Skyline Conference rival St. Joseph's-Long Island. The Dolphins were looking complete the season sweep of the Golden Eagles, doing so with ease, winning 78-59, improving to 14-7 overall and 10-4 in conference play.
This marks the fourth straight season that CMSV has swept the Golden Eagles, with their last loss coming in November of 2012.
Kristen Merrell led three Dolphins in double figures, matching her season-high with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting.
Brittany Carroll connected on 4-of-6 from 3-point land en route to 12 points,
Dez Brown shot a perfect 5-of-5 from the field for 10 points and
Christina Barone dished out 10 assists, while also adding seven points.
The Mount never trailed during the game and opened up action in the first quarter on a 9-0 run less than two minutes into the game. The Dolphins had assists on 10 of their 11 made field goals in the first quarter. In the opening 10 minutes of action, the lead would swell to as much as 15 points after a
Kaitlin McGeown layup made the score 21-6 with 1:46 left in the opening frame.
Things continued the Dolphins way in the second quarter with strong defense and efficient offense. The stingy CMSV defense only allowed nine points in the quarter. The lead continued to grow and would reach 26 late in the period, first after a 3-pointer by
Haley Garcia and in the final seconds on a Merrell layup.
In the third quarter CMSV's lead grew to as much as 37 points at the 6:15 mark when
Kelly Oliver converted a fast break layup to put her side ahead 61-24.
The Dolphins took a 32 point advantage into the final quarter, where the Golden Eagles would not go away. Over the final two periods, the visitors connected on 10-of-17 from 3-point land, and would eventually trim the lead down to 19 points with just over 90 seconds left in the game.
