POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The CMSV Men's Volleyball team returned to action this weekend, traveling to Vassar College and participating in the 2017 Vassar College Invitational. The Dolphins played three matches, one Friday night and two on Saturday but dropped all three decisions, falling to 4-7 on the season.
First up for the Mount was Johnson and Wales on Friday night, however, after putting up a fight in the first set, the Dolphins dropped the next two, falling via sweep to JWU 3-0, (29-27, 25-14, 25-22).
Tyler Cucullu led all players with 16 kills, a .371 hitting percentage and a team-high seven kills.
The Dolphins had a great opportunity to win the first after taking a 24-22 lead but dropped three straight points to fall behind 25-24. Cucullu would connect on a kill to even things at 25, then a kill from
Scott Sawyer and JWU error put CMSV ahead 27-26, but JWU would close out the set on back-to-back aces by Kyle MacKnight.
CMSV didn't hit over .100% in the final two sets and only combined for 19 kills, the amount they had in the first set alone.
On Saturday, the Dolphins first took on Stevenson University, who dominated play over the three sets, sweeping CMSV 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-22). Cucullu once again led all players with 15 kills, while
Jordan Steiger added seven. The Mount only hit above .100% in the second set.
The final match of the weekend came against the hosts and #8 team in the country, Vassar College. After struggling against the potent Vassar attack in the first 2 sets, the Dolphins rallied in the third to win but fell in the fourth 25-19.
The Dolphins had one of their cleanest sets of the season in the third. The team hit .444% and only committed two errors.
Cucullu tallied a game-high 22 kills with Sawyer adding six and Steiger four.
Logan Dickover had his third straight match with over 25 assists.
