Box Score Riverdale, N.Y. - On an afternoon that three seniors were honored by the College of Mount Saint Vincent, the men's soccer team was able to secure their third straight win by defeating the Old Westbury Panthers by the score of 2-1. It is also their third-straight victory against Skyline Conference competition.
The pregame ceremony - which honored team captains
Andrew Gomez,
Joseph Llamuca, and
Rich Diodati - was met with a warm response, as the players were awarded framed jerseys and action shots and were greeted by their parents at midfield. But once that concluded, the Dolphins went through a physical affair to secure the win.
After an even, hard-fought battle over the first 18 minutes of play,
Guy Horcasitas got CMSV on the board with a long goal that was assisted by
Luciano Cirelli.
The tilt remained a one goal edge in the Dolphins favor through the end of the first half. But in the 64th minute,
Julius Tumukunde fought through defenders to record his own rebound and secure his fifth goal of the season.
The two goal lead didn't last, as Panthers freshman forward Jorey Garcia cut the lead in half in the 74th minute. The game remained close but a stout Dolphins defense put the game away in the final minutes.
The win gave Mount Saint Vincent their sixth in Skyline play, which bodes well for the team's quest to have home-field advantage come playoff time. They'll take on The College of New Jersey on Sunday with the hopes of winning their fourth straight contest.
