NEW YORK, NY - The CMSV softball team hosted Skyline Conference foe SUNY Old Westbury in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Dolphins took both games to improve their overall and conference record to 3-1.
CMSV 8 Old Westbury 1 - Game 1Dolphins starter
Mackenzie Heizer was outstanding limiting Old Westbury to just one run and one hit over seven innings. The junior struck out 11 batters and walked only three batters.
After surrendering a run in the top of the first inning, CMSV finally broke through in the bottom of the third, when they scored two runs on a
Rachel Heizer 2-run homerun. The team added one more run in the bottom of the fourth on a
Katie Moos sacrifice fly, which scored
Carol Santo.
In the bottom of the fifth, R. Heizer doubled to lead off the inning and would advance to third on a single by M. Heizer. She would then come around to score when the next batter,
Joann Guerra, hit a sacrifice fly to center field. M. Heizer would score later in the inning on a
Samantha Broo single to make the score 5-1 Dolphins.
In the bottom of the sixth M. Heizer would deliver with her third hit of the day which would drive home
Kathryn Dalton and
Danielle Maffei. Heizer would score when the next batter, Guerra, doubled to make the score 8-1.
M. Heizer would close out the Panthers in the top of the seventh striking out the final two batters.
CMSV 14 Old Westbury 5 - Game 2In game two, the Dolphins would explode for 11 runs in the first inning. The scoring started right away when Maffei homered to deep center and it would continue as CMSV sent 16 batters up in the inning. The big blast came when
Rianna Laughridge smacked a 3-run double to make the score 6-0.
R. Heizer was effective in the circle as she went 5 innings, giving up only two earned runs and scattering six hits, while striking out three batters.
The Dolphins head to Florida for Spring Break and will take part in the Gene Cusic Softball Classic from March 22 to March 24, where they will play six games.
