FARMINGDALE, NY - The CMSV softball team opened the 2016 season on Saturday afternoon playing a doubleheader against Farmingdale State. The Dolphins won game 1 4-2 in 9 innings but fell 6-5 in game 2.
CMSV 4 Farmingdale State 2Mackenzie Heizer started game one for the Dolphins but only lasted 2.2 innings. The junior couldn't find the strike zone as she issued six free passes and had five wild pitches. Heizer didn't allow a hit and struck out two batters
Kathryn Dalton came in to relieve Heizer in the 3rd inning and would go the remaining 6.1 innings surrendering only four hits while striking out five Farmingdale batters.
In the 6th inning the Dolphins finally broke
through taking advantage of sloppy defense and scored both their runs in the inning without registering a hit. Samantha Broo and Deanna Nardi scored on Farmingdale errors to tie the game at 2-2. Another run was nearly scored when M. Heizer singled through the left side but Katie Moos was thrown out at home.
Dalton shut down the Rams in the 6th, 7th and 8th, facing one batter over the minimum.
In the top of the 9th, Dalton helped our her own cause by leading off the inning with a single, she would advance to third when Rachel Heizer doubled to deep right center. The next batter was intentionally walked, loading the bases for Joann Guerra. Guerra delivered, singling to left field scoring Dalton and R. Heizer to give the Dolphins a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the 9th, Dalton shut down the Rams, allowing a runner to reach second with two outs after a wild pitch. She would induce a game-ending groundout to secure the victory.
Farmingdale State 6 CMSV 5
Rachel Heizer started for the Dolphins in game 2 and the sophomore would go the distance, surrendering five earned runs on 11 hits, while striking out four.
CMSV started off the game scoring four runs in the first two innings. Danielle Maffei led off the game with a walk and would score later in the inning on a M. Heizer single to left.
In the 2nd inning, the Dolphins plated three more runs when Dalton would smack a 2-run single which scored Carol Santo and Maffei, Moos would score when the next batter, R. Heizer, singled her home.
Farmingdale would trim the lead down to 4-3 after scoring three runs in the 3rd and 4th innings.
In the 5th CMSV would score again on a Krysten Bourdeau double which scored Guerra.
Entering the bottom of the 7th, the Dolphins led 5-3 but an RBI triple began the three run barrage leading Farmingdale to a walk-off 6-5 victory.
The Dolphins return to action Sunday March 20, when they will host SUNY Old Westbury in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12pm.
