RIVERDALE, NY - The CMSV women's basketball team knocked off top-ranked Sage College 77-62 on Thursday night, giving the Gators their first conference loss of the season and improving the Dolphins to 15-8 overall and 11-3 in Skyline play.
Christina Barone and
Brittany Carroll led all scorers with 18 points each, with Carroll going 3-for-3 from 3-point land and Barone scoring nine of her 18 in the fourth quarter.
Theresa Carey added 12 points and nine rebounds, while
Allison Clarke and
Kelly Oliver added nine points each.
The first quarter play lived up to the expectations of a game featuring two of the top three teams in the conference. Both teams traded baskets throughout the opening period, with CMSV shooting 6-of-18, including nailing 3-of-4 from 3-point land, including a buzzer beater to end the period by Carroll to make the score 17-16 after 10 minutes of play.
In the second quarter, CMSV got into foul trouble early on, sending Sage to the line 13 times in the period, where they converted 10. The Gators would push their lead to 15, three different times in the final two minutes of play, but
Kelly Oliver nailed a three with 0:03 left to cut the lead to 45-33.
The Dolphins turned up the defense when they came out from halftime, holding the Gators to 3-of-15 from the field in the third quarter, while they shot 6-of-14, trimming the lead to one point at the end of the period.
Carroll started off the fourth quarter nailing a three to give the Dolphins their first lead since the first quarter. The team would only miss two shots the entire period and used a 21-5 run from the thrid quarter to the fourth quarter to take a 67-56 lead after a Barone layup. CMSV would maintain their hot shooting touch expanding their lead to as much as 15 points in the final minutes.
The Dolphins return to action Saturday at 1pm when they will square off against SUNY Old Westbury in a matchup of the current #2 and #3 seeds in the Skyline.
