BROOKLYN, NY - The CMSV women's basketball team took on St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn on Monday night, in a makeup game that was canceled due to weather on January 20th. The Dolphins came away with a key Skyline Conference victory defeating the Lady Bears 89-67 improving to 11-8 overall and 8-3 in conference play.
Brittany Carroll had a career night as the junior guard scored a career-high 29 points, including five three pointers. She had plenty of help from her teammates as three other Dolphins tallied double figures in points,
Gabriella Melgar had 18,
Kelly Nola had 17 and
Christina Barone had 11. Nola and Barone tallied double-doubles, with Nola grabbing 11 rebounds and Barone tallying 12 assists.
CMSV played from behind the entire first quarter, getting down by 12 points just 4:40 into the game. They would fall behind by as much as 17 points with 2:09 left in the quarter but would end the final minute scoring eight of the last 10 points, including a 3-pointer to beat the buzzer by Melgar to cut her teams deficit to 25-14 after 10 minutes of action.
The Dolphins were a completely different team on the offensive end in the second quarter shooting 10-of-23 from the field. The lead would get trimmed down to one after Nola made two free throws and then Barone and Carroll would make back-to-back shots to give CMSV their first lead of the game at 29-26 with 4:58 remaining until halftime. The teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the half and would go into the locker rooms all knotted up at 40 apiece.
To start the third quarter, the Lady Bears were able to answer every made Dolphin shot with one of their own, as St. Joe's held a slim lead through the opening four minutes of the second half.
With 6:06 remaining in the quarter, St. Joe's Destiny Marino made 1-of-2 from the free throw line to put her team up 50-47, but over the final six minutes of the quarter, CMSV took control going on a 14-5 run to take a 61-55 lead into the fourth quarter.
Melgar & Carroll would star for CMSV in the final quarter as they both were perfect from the field and 3-point land, as the Dolphins were able to take control of the game, growing their lead to as much as 24 after a a Melgar 3, made it 87-63 with just under two minutes to play. CMSV outscored St. Joe's 28-12 in the quarter and shot 55% from the field in the second half.
The Dolphins return to action Wednesday when they will host Yeshiva at 8:30pm. Remember prior to the tip-off of the women's game, there will be a ceremony to honor the inaugural AD Honor Roll as well as CMSV faculty who support the Dolphins.
