Dolphins Get Back To Winning Ways; Advance To Championship Game

Alkhulaidi Goes For 18 To Lead CMSV

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The CMSV Men's Basketball team returned to action on Monday afternoon, as they took on Elmira College in the Luck Stone Holiday Tournament, hosted by Hampden-Sydney College.

The Dolphins led pretty much the entire game and snapped their 6-game losing streak, downing Elmira 64-52 and earning their second win of the season. The Mount advances to the Championship game, on Tuesday at 4pm, where they will take on the host Hampden-Sydney Tigers.

Ammad Alkhulaidi led the Dolphins, scoring a game-high 18 points and grabbing a team-high six rebounds, before fouling out late in the second half. Matthew Sowah added 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while David Collins added in 11 points, leading the Dolphins bench unit, which outscored Elmira's 31-12.

Elmira scored on their first possession of the game, which would be the only lead they would hold over the course of the entire game. The Dolphins would score the next 11 points and take a nine point lead on an Alkhulaidi layup with 14:25 left in the first half.

The Soaring Eagles responded and would cut the Dolphins lead down to one point after two made free throws by Connor Bays made the score 20-19 with 5:49 left until halftime.

Alkhulaidi, who scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half, would score six of the teams final eight points in the closing minutes of the first half to give the Dolphins a 28-22 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half Elmira continued to claw back and keep it close with the Dolphins. After a jumper by Andrew Curiel on the Dolphins opening possession of the second half to put the team up eight, the Soaring Eagles scored the next six points to make it a two point game, forcing the Dolphins into calling a timeout.

The game remained close for the next 10 minutes of game action as CMSV was only able to grow their lead to four points at its peak.

Elmira did tie the game on a Justin Ruback tip-in with 11:13 left in the game to tie the score at 40, but back-to-back jumpers by David Collins pushed the Dolphins ahead by four.

Jose Maestre added some key buckets down the stretch, including a 3-pointer with 8:56 left in the game to give the team a four point lead, which spurred a Dolphins 12-3 run over the next three minutes to put the Dolphins ahead by 10 points.

Collins was clutch in the closing moments of the game making two key jumpers, while Maestre was 3-of-4 from the line.
