HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The CMSV Men's Basketball team wrapped up play at the Luck Stone Holiday Tournament on Tuesday afternoon, falling in overtime to the host Hampden-Sydney Tigers 91-85. The loss drops the Dolphins to 2-7 on the season.
Matthew Sowah led the Mount with his best performance of the season, scoring 17 points, while dishing out seven assists and swiping four steals, both of which are new career highs for the junior from Staten Island.
Ammad Alkhulaidi chipped in with 16 points and seven rebounds.
The Dolphins had one of their best shooting games of the season against the Tigers, topping 85 points for the second time in the last three games, while making a season best 13 three pointers on 26 attempts for a 46% shooting clip. Also for the second time in the last three games the Dolphins connected on 50% of their shots from the field, going 29-of-58 from the field.
Nine CMSV players made a three pointer on the afternoon, led by freshman
Austin Mick who connected on 3-of-7 from distance, while
Trevor Johnson and Alkhulaidi each connected on two from beyond the arc.
The Dolphins held the Tigers without a point for nearly four minutes in the first half and took a 7-0 lead on an
Andrew Curiel 3-pointer with 16:47 on the clock. The Mount extended their lead to 11 on an Alkhulaidi 3-pointer to make the score 17-6 with 14:03 left in the half.
The Tigers went on a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to trim the lead down to one but a 3-pointer by
Ramiel Coleman and layup by Kahlil Shorter on back-to-back possessions put the Dolphins ahead 26-20 with 7:28 remaining before halftime.
The home side would take their first lead of the half with 3:45 left in the half and the teams would trade buckets over the final few minutes with
Jose Maestre making a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left to tie the game at 34 all heading into halftime.
In the second half the Dolphins trailed for much of the opening minutes but the Tigers were only able to grow their lead to four points. Over the course of play during the rest of the second half, the lead would alternate between teams with no lead being larger than six points.
Trailing by five points with 1:21 left in the game, Mick would drain a 3-pointer with only 11 seconds coming off the clock to trim the lead to 69-67. The teams would alternate free throws over the next few possessions with CMSV going 4-for-4, while HSU went 3-for-4.
The Dolphins got the ball for the final possession of the second half trailing by three and 17 seconds on the clock and Mick would strike again, making his second three of the closing minute to tie the game at 74 and force overtime.
In overtime, the Dolphins couldn't find the touch on offense, making only 2-of-6 from the field in the extra session. A personal 7-0 run by Gullherem Gulmares put his team up 83-76 with 1:17 left in the game. The home side closed out the game by making 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
