Box Score 2 UNION, NJ - The CMSV men's volleyball team kicked of the 2016 season in the Kean Winter Classic, taking on D'Youville College and #14 Stevenson University. The Dolphins dropped both matches, falling 3-1 to D'Youville and 3-0 to Stevenson.
D'Youville 3 CMSV 1 (25-21, 17-25, 25-17, 25-21)In the first set the Dolphins took control of the game early jumping out to a 4-1 lead, thanks to attack errors by the Spartans and getting a kill from
Tyler Cucullu. CMSV would keep a lead through the middle of the set and would find themselves up 12-9 after a
Logan Dickover ace but the Spartans would respond going on a 10-3 run to take a 19-15 lead forcing a Dolphin timeout.
After the timeout, CMSV would immediately cut the lead to one at 19-18 but the Spartans scored four of the final five points to take a 25-21 lead.
In the second set the Dolphins once again took control early on taking an 11-7 lead after back-to-back aces from Dickover and would advance their lead to 15-11 forcing a Spartan timeout. After the timeout, CMSV maintained the pressure expanding their lead to 17-11 and would seal the set victory with a 5-0 run to take their lead from 19-16 to 24-16, getting kills from Dickover and
Owen Smith.
In the third and fourth sets, the Spartans would control both sets despite CMSV having their two best sets of the night, hitting .211% in the third and .214% in the fourth set. However, the Spartans were even sharper hitting .421% in the third and .450% in the fourth.
Cucullu led the way with 14 kills and hit .156%, Dickover added 31 assists, three kills and four service aces.
#14 Stevenson 3 CMSV 0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-21)Against the fourteenth ranked team in the AVCA pre-season coaches poll, the Dolphins were overmatched from the start as the #14 Mustangs hit .529% in the first set while CMSV only managed two kills in 18 attempts.
The Dolphins were able to challenge the Mustangs as the match progressed as they were once again led by Cucullu who had nine kills, two aces and three digs, while
Neven Skoblar had two kills and three total blocks.
CMSV returns to action tomorrow when they will take on #2 Stevens Tech and #8 Rutgers-Newark at 1pm and 3pm.
