Mount Saint Vincent Takes Two From Old Westbury

Old Westbury, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team scored two Skyline Conference victories at Old Westbury on Thursday afternoon, downing the Panthers 2-1 and 7-0. Senior Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) earned the game one win in the circle with 10 strikeouts and scored three times in the game two victory.
 
Mount Saint Vincent got all the scoring it would need in Thursday's opener with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Mount's first tally came on a two out single from Casey Cuccio (Medford, N.Y.) that delivered Rachel Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.) for the 1-0 lead.
 
The Dolphins added their second run and the eventual game winning tally in the fifth when Heizer doubled home Davis with two outs in the inning. Davis started the rally with a two-out single and was moved into scoring position when Kathryn Dalton (Northampton, Pa.) was hit with a pitch.
 
Old Westbury pulled to within a run and got its only tally of the game in the home half of the seventh when it strung together three hits. Nicole DeCola started the inning with a single and her pinch runner later scored on an Amanda Fucci single with one out. Following the single, Heizer came on for the Dolphins to get the final two outs and record her first save of the season.
 
Davis and Rachel Heizer each recorded two hits in the game with Heizer hitting a pair of doubles and driving in a run. Davis scored a run for the Dolphins with Mackenzie Heizer drawing a pair of walks.
 
Davis picked up the win in the circle and moved to 1-2 on the season with 6.1 strong innings of work. She allowed one run on six hits and fanned a season-high 10 batters in the game. Rachel Heizer came on to get a groundout and a strikeout in the seventh to record her first career save.
 
In game two, the Dolphins got the deciding run in their first at-bat when Rachel Heizer hit her team leading ninth double of the season, driving in Davis who singled with one out in the inning. The run batted in was Heizer's fifth of the season, tying her for third on the team in the category.
 
The Dolphins added to their lead in the third with two more runs when Mackenzie Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.) and Rianna Laughridge (Vacaville, Calif.) recorded run scoring singles and broke the game open in the seventh with the final four runs of the contest. Mackenzie Heizer drove in two runs with a double and Kierstyn Bourdeau (Cheshire, Conn.) knocked in two more runs with a single in the inning.
 
Davis finished game two 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored with both Mackenzie and Rachel Heizer recording two hits. Rachel scored two runs and Mackenzie drove in three joining Bourdeau with a team-high nine RBI on the season.
 
Dalton earned the win in the circle for the Dolphins in game two and moved to 1-1 on the season, working 4.0 innings. She allowed four hits and struck out two for the Dolphins. Rachel Heizer came on for her second save of the day, pitching the final three innings and recording four strikeouts.
 
With two victories on Thursday, Mount Saint Vincent improves to 5-9 overall on the season and to 4-0 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be back on the field on Friday when they tussle with St. Joseph's-L.I. First pitch with the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
