West Harrison, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team closed out its final full weekend of conference play with a conference doubleheader loss to St. Joseph's-L.I. on Sunday. The Dolphins were blanked in the opener 11-0 before dropping a 5-1 decision in game two. Sophomore right hander
Robert Negron (Bronx, N.Y.) worked his second complete game of the year for Mount in game two.
St. Joseph's broke open a scoreless game with six runs in the top of the second in Sunday's opener. The Golden Eagles' first two run crossed on a throwing error before James Nakashian delivered two runs with a single and Brendan Sullivan drove in a pair of runs with a double. Five of the six runs that crossed in the frame were unearned.
The visitors added to their lead with two runs in the fourth, two more in the fifth and a single tally in the top of the seventh. Sullivan delivered his second two-run double of the game in the fourth and Anthony Bonilla drove in both runs in the fifth with a double. Joseph Lynn closed out the scoring in the game with an RBI single for St. Joseph's in the seventh.
The Golden Eagles recorded 13 hits in game one, including six extra base hits. Nakashian finished 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI with Sullivan going 3-fof-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Anthony Andreani also finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Mount Saint Vincent managed just two hits in game one and was shutout for the second straight contest.
Cristian Lynch (Mastic, N.Y.) and
Casey Surdi (West Islip, N.Y.) both singled for the Dolphins with Surdi also drawing a walk in the game.
Freshman Siddeq Ali (Apopka, Fla.) took the loss in game one after allowing eight runs, only three earned, on eight hits in 3.2 innings. He struck out two and walked three in falling to 0-3 on the year. Josh Outsen moved to 4-1 for St. Joseph's after working a complete game shutout and striking out five.
In game two, Mount Saint Vincent got on the board first after producing a run without a hit in the home half of the third inning.
Nicholas Pace (Cranford, N.J.) pushed home
Joseph Senisi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) on a fielder's choice. The run was the first for the Dolphins since plating 10 runs in the fifth inning of game one against Farmingdale State on Saturday, a span of 18 innings.
Trailing for the first time on the day, St. Joseph's answered with two runs in the fifth inning of game two and scored all five of its runs in its final three at-bats. The first two runs came home on a two out bunt single from Lynn with runners on second and third. Joseph Calabrese delivered a run with a single in the sixth before Lynn scored on a double steal and Nick Girardi drove in a run with a single in the seventh.
The Dolphins were held to three hits in the backend of Sunday's set with Lynch going 1-for-3 with a double.
Keith Brodesser (Copiague, N.Y.) and Senisi each singled for the Mount with Senisi reaching twice after getting hit with a pitch. He scored the only run of the day for the Dolphins and Pace drove in his team leading 24
th run of the season.
Girardii closed game two 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI with Andreani collecting two more hits for the visitors and adding a run. Lynn scored one and drove in two for the Golden Eagles.
Negron went the distance for the Dolphins in game two, surrendering five runs on seven hits. He fanned three hitters and walked one in falling to 3-2. Girarid picked up the win with 4.0 innings of work, striking out six. Michael Catanzaro earned his second save of the year with 3.0 innings of shutout relief, striking out two.
Sunday's sweep drops Mount Saint Vincent to 8-23 overall on the season and to 5-7 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will return to the field on April 23 for a non-conference contest at Baruch. The game will be contested at Westchester Community College with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
