Troy, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team earned a split at Sage on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Gators 6-0 before rebounding for a 7-4 win in game two that clinched its second straight berth into the Skyline Conference Tournament. Freshman Rachel Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.) connected on a grand slam in game two, driving in the deciding run in the game.

After having a perfect game worked against them in game one on Saturday, the Dolphins broke through with two runs in the top of the fourth inning of game two to knot the score at 2-2. Following a Rachel Heizer double to put runners on second and third with two out, Mackenzie Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.) drove home a pair of runs with a single to bring the Dolphins even.

Sage moved back in front 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the fourth before Kathryn Dalton (Northampton, Pa.) brought the Dolphins even for a second time with a sacrifice fly that chased home Celestina Alfaro (Norwalk, Calif.) to tie the score at 3-3.

With the game deadlocked at three runs apiece in the top of the seventh, the Dolphins put the first three runners on. Joann Guerra (Bronx, N.Y.) reached on an error and following singles from Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) and Dalton, Heizer ripped her sixth home run of the season to push the Mount in front 7-3.

Sage got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on an Alexa Silk run scoring single with two outs, but a groundout ended the game and sent the Dolphins to their second straight league tournament.

Mount Saint Vincent recorded 10 hits in game two and showed seven different players with at least one hit. Rachel Heizer went 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBI and Mackenzie Heizer finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Rianna Laughridge (Vacaville, Calif.) rounded out a trio with multiple hits with a 2-for-4 effort in game two. Guerra went 1-for-4 with two runs for the Dolphins.

Makenzie Heizer won her ninth game for the Dolphins, allowing four runs on seven hits. She struck out five and issued two walks in moving to 9-6 on the season.

In game one on Saturday, Mount Saint Vincent had a perfect game worked against them by Sage starter Katie Kovage. She faced the minimum in the opener, recording a single strikeout. Mackenzie Heizer suffered her first loss in her last eight decisions in the opener, striking out five.

At 14-18 overall on the season and 10-4 in conference play, the Dolphins will close out the regular season with a 3:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at New York University.
