Patchogue, N.Y. – Led by two hits from three different players and sophomore
Mackenzie Heizer's (Vacaville, Calif.) eighth win of the season, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team earned a split of the season series and an important conference win at St. Joseph's-L.I. on Friday, downing the Golden Eagles by a score of 4-2.
Mount Saint Vincent took its first lead of the game in the fourth inning when a
Rianna Laughridge (Vacaville, Calif.) single delivered
Rachel Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.) to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead with one out in the inning.
The Dolphins' lead would be short lived as the Golden Eagles responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning to move in front 2-1. With two outs and no one on in the inning, St. Joseph's strung together three straight hits to plate its only runs of the game. Nicole Reda drove in a run with a single and Melanie Boccio later scored on an error to close out the scoring in the frame.
Trailing by a run, Mount Saint Vincent scored three times in the sixth to move in front for good in the game. The Dolphins took advantage of four hits, a hit batter and a walk to secure an important league win.
Kierstyn Bourdeau (Cheshire, Conn.) drove in the Mount's first run of the inning with
Joann Guerra (Bronx, N.Y.) and
Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) also producing run scoring base hits in the inning.
St. Joseph's would advance a runner to third base in the home half of the sixth inning and brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but four strikeouts over the final two frames from
Mackenzie Heizer thwarted a Golden Eagle come back.
Rachel Heizer closed the game 2-for-3, including her team leading 16
th double of the season, and scored a pair of runs. Bourdeau went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Laughridge went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Mackenzie Heizer won her seventh straight decision on Friday, working her seventh complete game of the season. She allowed one earned run on six hits and struck out nine as she moved to 8-5 on the season. Mallory McClafferty took the loss and fell to 6-4 after working 7.0 innings and striking out six.
Friday's win moves Mount Saint Vincent to 13-17 overall on the season and to 9-3 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will close out the league schedule on Saturday when they play two on the road at Sage. First pitch with the Gators is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
