Mount Saint Vincent Sweeps Cross-Town Rival Lehman

Mackenzie Heizer records both wins, Rachel Heizer drives in five runs

Bronx, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team stopped a string of three straight doubleheader splits with a sweep of Lehman on Thursday, downing its cross-town rival by scores of 18-0 and 8-5. Sophomore Mackenzie Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.) won both games for the Dolphins in the circle, while Rachel Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.) drove in five runs in the opener.
 
After plating two runs in the home half of the first inning in game one, the Dolphins broke the game open with nine tallies in the second to pull in front 11-0. The Mount recorded six hits in the inning and took advantage of two Lehman errors to open the double digit lead. Casey Cuccio (Medford, N.Y.) was one of six different players to drive in a run in the second, chasing home Kierstyn Bourdeau (Cheshire, Conn.) and Mackenzie Heizer with a single.
 
The Dolphins added single run in the third on Rachel Heizer's team leading fifth home run of the season and then closed out the scoring with six runs in the fourth inning. Rachel Heizer and Bourdeau each produced two-run doubles in the fourth for the Dolphins.
 
Mount Saint Vincent outhit Lehman 13-2 in game one and showed nine different players with a hit and four players with two hits. Joann Guerra (Bronx, N.Y.), Kathryn Dalton (Northampton, Pa.) and Rachel Heizer all went 2-for-3 in the game with Heizer scoring three times and driving in five. Dalton scored three times and Bourdeau and Cuccio each drove in three runs.
 
Mackenzie Heizer moved to 6-5 on the season with the complete game victory, allowing only two hits in 5.0 innings. She struck out 10 for the Mount and surrendered one walk. At the plate, she walked three times in game one and scored a pair of runs.
 
The Dolphins fell behind early in game two after Lehman plated two runs in the top of the first inning. The Dolphins responded with four runs in the home half of the inning keyed by a two-run single from Rianna Laughridge (Vacaville, Calif.) that delivered Rachel Heizer and Dalton.
 
Mount Saint Vincent gave up the lead in the third when Lehman tied the score on a two-run single from Meghan Bravo that evened the score at 4-4 and then trailed for the second time in the game when am unearned run crossed in the fifth to put the Lightning in front 5-4.
 
Trailing by a run, the Mount answered with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull away for the game two win. Both Dolphins' runs in the fifth were unearned and Bourdeau gave the Mount the final three run cushion with her third home run of the season.
 
Laughridge went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI in game two and was the only Mount Saint Vincent player with more than one hit in the contest. Bourdeau and Mackenzie Heizer each scored twice in the game for the Dolphins and five different players finished with a hit and a run scored.
 
Macakenzie Heizer came on to work the final 4.0 innings in game two, giving up an unearned run and one hit. She struck out seven as she moved to 7-5 on the season.
 
With two wins on Thursday, Mount Saint Vincent stands at 12-17 overall on the season. Mount Saint Vincent will travel to St. Joseph's-L.I. on Friday for a single game. First pitch with the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
