Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader At St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn

Guerra totals four hits, three RBI for the Dolphins

Bellerose, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team split its third straight doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, topping St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 9-0 and then falling to the Lady Bears 1-0. Junior Joann Guerra (Bronx, N.Y.) drove in three runs for the Dolphins in Tuesday's opener.
 
In game one, the Dolphins broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Guerra drove in the eventual game winning run when she delivered Alondra Soroa (Bronx, N.Y.) and Celestina Alfaro (Norwalk, Calif.) with a two-run double.  Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) also added a two-run double in the frame and Mackenzie Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.) added a run scoring double to close out the scoring.
 
Mount Saint Vincent added to its 5-0 lead in the fifth when Soroa connected on a run scoring double that plated Casey Cuccio (Medford, N.Y.). Guerra drove in her third run of the game with a single in the fifth and Heizer chased Rachel Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.) and Davis home with a two-run single.
 
The Dolphins outhit St. Joseph's 14-2 in Tuesday's opener with everyone in the lineup recording at least one hit. Guerra, Mackenzie Heizer, Rachel Heizer, Rianna Laughridge (Vacaville, Calif.) and Soroa posted a pair of hits in the game. Guerra scored twice and drove in three runs with Davis, Cuccio and Soroa all scoring a pair of runs. Mackenzie Heizer drove in three runs, pushing her team leading RBI total to 30.
 
Mackenzie Heizer picked up her fifth win of the season in game one, working her fifth complete game of the season. She allowed two hits and fanned 10 without giving up a walk. She now stands at 5-5 on the year and has struck out 80 batters in 62 innings.
 
In game two, the Dolphins outhit the Lady Bears 5-2, but could not push across a run. The only run in the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning when St. Joseph's got a two-out RBI single from Kristin Ferrigno. Stephanie Rancel scored the Lady Bear's run after doubling with two outs in the inning for the Lady Bear's only other hit of the game.
 
Guerra picked up two more hits for the Dolphins in game two with Rachel Heizer, Soroa and Kierstyn Bourdeau (Cheshire, Conn.) all recording hits. Bourdeau doubled for the Mount, her second of the season, with Rachel Heizer and Laughridge each drawing a walk.
 
Rachel Heizer suffered the loss in game two after working her second complete game of the season. She recorded seven strikeouts for the Dolphins without giving up a walk.
 
With the split on Tuesday, Mount Saint Vincent moves to 10-17 overall on the season. The Dolphins will return to action on Thursday when they close out the home schedule against Lehman. The non-conference set will be played on the campus of Lehman College starting at 5:00 p.m.
