Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team settled for its second split of the weekend on Sunday following a 7-5 win and 12-3 loss to visiting Mount Saint Mary. Sophomore
Mackenzie Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.) won game one in the circle for the Dolphins and drove in a pair of runs in game two.
Mount Saint Vincent broke a scoreless tie in the third inning of the opener when it plated four runs. The Mount posted five hits in the inning, including run scoring singles form
Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) and
Rachel Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.). Sophomore
Kierstyn Bourdeau (Cheshire, Conn.) closed out the scoring in the inning with a two-run single with two outs in the frame.
The Dolphins' lead would be short lived as Mount Saint Mary plated five runs in the top half of the fourth to pull in front by a run. Danielle Soto recorded one of the team's five hits in the inning, driving in a pair of runs with a two-out single.
After being held of the board in the fourth, Mount Saint Vincent tallied three more times in the fifth to finish off the scoring in the game. The Dolphins took advantage of two hits and two Mount Saint Mary errors in the frame, with
Mackenzie Heizer driving in the tying run with a single. The eventual game winning run was delivered on a
Rianna Laughridge (Vacaville, Calif.) sacrifice fly and
Casey Cuccio (Medford, N.Y.) drove in an insurance run with two outs in the inning.
Cuccio and
Kathryn Dalton (Northampton, Pa.) each finished game one with two hits for the Dolphins, with Dalton, Davis and
Rachel Heizer each scoring two runs. Bourdeau drove in her 18
th and 19
th runs of the season and
Joann Guerra ripped a double, accounting for the Mount's only extra base hit of the game.
Stephanie Karcher recorded two of Mount Saint Mary's seven hits in the opener with Soto driving in a pair of runs. Five different Knights scored a run in the contest.
Mackenzie Heizer picked up the win in game one and moved to 4-5 on the season. She worked her team leading fourth complete game of the season, allowing only two earned runs on seven hits. She struck out eight and walked one. Cindy Connoly took the loss in relief after surrendering three unearned runs on three hits.
In game two, the Knights scored in five of their seven at-bats and broke open a 1-1 tie with three runs in the third and three more in the fourth inning. Connoly drove in two runs in the third with a single and Michelle Surdan highlighted the three-run fourth with a two-run triple.
Mount Saint Vincent got two runs in the fifth inning to cut its deficit to 7-3, getting an RBI single from
Rachel Heizer that pushed Guerra across and a run scoring double from
Mackenzie Heizer, her second of the game.
The Knights promptly got a run back in the sixth on a Connoly RBI single and broke the game open again with four runs in the top half of the seventh. Karcher keyed the big inning with a bases clearing three-run double.
Mount Saint Mary had five players with multiple hits in game two and pounded out 17 safeties in the game. Connoly went 4-fof-4 with four RBI with Karcher going 3-for-4 with a double, four runs and three RBI. Surdan also drove in three runs for the Knights and scored twice.
Mount Saint Vincent got two hits from Guerra, who connected on her fourth double of the season, adding two runs. Dalton picked up two more hits for the Dolphins with
Mackenzie Heizer adding two doubles and two RBI. Heizer moved her team leading RBI total to 27.
Davis took the game two loss for Mount Saint Vincent, falling to 2-6 on the season. She allowed three earned runs on six hits in 2.0 innings. Connoly rebounded for the win in game two for Mount Saint Mary, working a complete game and striking out five.
With the split on Sunday, Mount Saint Vincent moves to 9-16 overall and to 8-3 in conference play. The Dolphins will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. First pitch with the Lady Bears is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
