Mahwah, N.J. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team split a pair of Skyline Conference matches for the second straight day on Sunday, downing New Jersey City University 25-12, 19-25, 25-19, 25-19 before falling for the second time this season to Ramapo 18-25, 18-25, 20-25. Tyler Cucullu (Henderson, Nev.) matched his season-high in kills with 17 against the Gothic Knights.
In Sunday's opener, a 3-1 victory, Mount Saint Vincent put away at least 10 kills in all four sets, including 14 winners in the opening set. The Dolphins overcame 17.5 total team blocks by the Gothic Knights in the match and did not allow more than nine kills in any of the four stanzas.
Cucullu led players in the match with 17 kills, committing nine attack errors in 40 attempts. Cucullu equaled the team-high with eight digs to go along with a service ace and four total blocks.
Senior
Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) finished the victory with 13 kills for the Dolphins, hitting .333 in 24 attempts. He closed a solid all-around contest with a pair of aces, six digs and four total blocks for the Dolphins.
Marc Barrerda (Bay Shore, N.Y.) recorded nine winners against NJCU for the Mount and lifted six digs, while
Logan Dickover (Las Vegas, Nev.) handed out a team-high 20 assists.
T.J. Barczik (lake Grove, N.Y.) and
James DiGiovanni (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each rounded out the contest with eight digs.
For the match, Mount Saint Vincent finished with a 48-31 advantage in kills and a slim 6-5 edge in service aces. NJCU finished the match with a convincing advantage in team blocking, closing the day with a 17.0-7.5 edge in the category.
In the second match of the day, the Dolphins were swept by the Roadrunners for the second time in a week's time. The Mount hit just .061 against Ramapo on Sunday, recording 20 kills and committing 16 attack miscues.
Barreda and Cucullu rounded out the day with six kills each and
Michael Kochen (Holbrook, N.Y.) totaled three kills in the contest for the Mount. Cucullu closed out a strong day with a team-high five digs against Ramapo.
DiGiovanni totaled 13 of the team's 19 assists in the match, with Cucullu and Holiday each finishing with a service ace. Barreda, Cucullu, DiGiovanni and Holiday all posted a block in the match for Mount Saint Vincent.
Ramapo held a 43-20 advantage in kills on the day and hit an efficient .341 as a team in the victory. The Roadrunners took the advantage in aces 7-2 and also held an 8-3 edge in total team blocks.
With Sunday's split, Mount Saint Vincent stands at 11-7 overall and 6-4 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will return home on March 18 when they welcome Medgar Evers to the Peter Jay Sharp Center. Match time with the Cougars is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
