Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team returned to action on Wednesday night and scored a 25-13, 25-20, 25-8 Skyline Conference win over visiting Sarah Lawrence. Senior
Reginald Owens (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Mount with nine kills, while freshman
Michael Barfield (Farmingville, N.Y.) handed out a match-high 27 assists.
Mount Saint Vincent trailed only once on Wednesday, falling behind 1-0 after an attack error to open the third set. The Dolphins quickly rebounded with the next four points, including two service aces from Owens to take the lead for good in the set, moving in front 4-1.
The Mount opened the night posting 12 kills and hitting .350 the first set and rebounded in the third frame to hit .348 after committing 11 attack errors in Wednesday's middle stanza. The Dolphins posted at least 10 kills in each of the three sets, allowing just four Sarah Lawrence winners for the night.
Owens rounded out the night with a career-high nine kills and hit .429 in the match to go along with five service aces. Classmate
Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) put away seven winners for the Mount, hitting .357 and posting four service aces.
Freshman
Sean O'Connor (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) came off the bench to produce five kills for Mount Saint Vincent with
Neven Skoblar (San Pedro, Calif.) posting three aces and
Marc Barreda (Bay Shore, N.Y.) recording a team-high nine digs. Barfield added two digs and an ace to his assist total on the night.
For the match, Mount Saint Vincent held the edge in kills 33-4 and in service aces 16-3. Sarah Lawrence closed the night with a 4-2 advantage in total team blocks, led by two blocks each from Amit Sankaran and Isaac Gamboa.
Wednesday's win moves Mount Saint Vincent to 14-9 overall on the season and to 8-5 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will close out league play on Saturday when they take on Sage. The match will be contested at Ramapo College in Mahwah, N.J. and is scheduled to get underway at 6:00 p.m.
