Union, N.J. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team returned to conference play on Sunday, falling on the road at #5 Kean 13-25, 13-25, 17-25 before rebounding to top Yeshiva 25-11, 25-21, 25-22. Freshman
Logan Dickover (Las Vegas, Nev.) posted a career-high 11 kills and classmate
Michael Barfield (Farmingville, N.Y.) recorded a career-high 37 assists against Yeshiva.
In the opener against Kean, Mount Saint Vincent hit just .048 and saw Kean hit an efficient .411 as a team. The Cougars finished each of the three sets with at least 10 kills, while the Dolphins combined for 13 kills over the first two frames. The Mount's most productive stanza against Kean was the third where it posted 10 kills in 28 attempts.
Senior
Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) and sophomore
Tyler Cucullu (Henderson, Nev.) led the Dolphins in the match with five kills each with Cucullu adding five digs.
Neven Skoblar (San Pedro, Calif.) and
Michael Kochen (Holbrook, N.Y.) each recorded four kills against the Cougars.
Senior
James DiGiovanni (Bay Shore, N.Y.) handed out 21 assists for the Mount and
T.J. Barczik (Lake Grove, N.Y.) lifted a team-high seven digs. DiGiovanni and
Marc Barreda (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each closed the match with a block for the Dolphins.
Bez Arsiani led Kean with eight kills and nine digs and also chipped in with a pair of blocks. Ron Dunn handed out a match-high 32 assists with John Cunningham, Kyle Farley and Tommy Rosario each posting three total blocks.
For the match, Kean finished with the advantage in kills 38-23, aces 7-3 and total team blocks 9.5-2.
Mount Saint Vincent rebounded to take the second match of the day, posting 47 kills and a .262 attack percentage against Yeshiva. The Dolphins opened the match hitting .400 in the first set against the Maccabees, committing only three attack errors in 25 attacks.
Dickover was the only Mount Saint Vincent player to reach double-figures in kills against Yeshiva, but was one of 10 different players to record a winner. He hit .320 in the match in 25 attempts, adding five digs and two assists. Kochen finished the tilt with eight kills for Mount Saint Vincent and Holiday totaled nine winners, hitting .571, to go along with three digs and two blocks.
Barfield totaled 37 of the team's 42 assists in the match, adding a kill and seven digs. Barczik led the team with nine digs and Kochen totaled two of the team's five service aces.
Mount Saint Vincent closed the contest with a 47-27 advantage in kills and a 5-1 edge in service aces. Total team blocks in the match were even at 5-5.
Following Sunday's split, Mount Saint Vincent stands at 13-9 overall on the season and 7-5 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will return to action on Wednesday night when they welcome league foe Sarah Lawrence to the Peter Jay Sharp Center. Match time with the Gryphons is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
