Men’s Volleyball Swept By Vassar; Cucullu Named To All-Tournament Team

Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent closed out play at the Bard Tournament on Saturday afternoon with a 14-25, 14-25, 20-25 loss at the hands of Vassar. Following the contest sophomore Tyler Cucullu (Henderson, Nev.) was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 2.44 kills per set and hitting .292 over three contests.
 
Mount Saint Vincent did not hold the lead on Saturday until the third set when a four point run led  by a kill and a service ace from Marc Barreda (Bay Shore, N.Y.) pushed the Dolphins in front 9-6. Vassar answered late in the set with seven straight points to break a 14-14 tie. The Dolphins would put together a four point run to come to within 24-20m but an Erik Halberg kill ended the match and gave the Brewers the victory.
 
The Dolphins put away 10 of their 26 kills in the third set and hit .174 in the frame. Barreda, Cucullu and Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) each collected two kills in the stanza, with Holiday recording two of the team's four total blocks in the set.
 
Barreda led the Dolphins on the day with nine kills, hitting .261 in the match. He also produced an ace, five digs and a block in the match. Holiday totaled five kills against the Brewers and picked up three blocks, running his team leading total to 27.
 
Cucullu rounded out the day with four kills and chipped in with five digs and four total blocks. James DiGiovanni (Bay Shore, N.Y.) led the Mount with 15 assists with T.J. Barczik (Lake Grove, N.Y.) lifting a team-high seven digs.
 
Vassar was led by nine kills from Matthew Knigge, who hit .500 on the day. Knigge picked up five of the team's 12 aces in the match and Quinn Rutledge led all players with nine digs.
 
Overall, Vassar held a 40-26 edge in kills and hit .341 as a unit on the day. The Brewers recorded 12 of the 13 service aces in the match, while the Dolphins held an 8.5-6 advantage in total team blocks.
 
With Saturday's loss, Mount Saint Vincent falls to 5-4 overall on the season. Next up for the Mount is a home non-conference match against Staten Island on Monday night. Match time at the Peter Jay Sharp Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
