Brett Holiday hit .714 in Friday's sweep of Lehman

Riverdale, N.Y. – Led by 11 kills from senior Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) and 10 winners from freshman Michael Kochen (Holbrook, N.Y.), the College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team posted a 25-15, 25-18, 25-23 non-conference win over visiting Lehman on Friday night.
 
The Dolphins never trailed in the first set on Friday and opened a quick 5-1 lead on the Lightning following a kill from Holiday, who posted two winners over the opening spurt. Freshman Neven Skoblar (San Pedro, Calif.) also put away two winners for the Mount to build the early four point lead.
 
After Lehman crept to within 7-6, the Dolphins posted the next five points to pull in front 12-6 on a Kochen winner. The Mount would later spread its lead to 18-9 off a kill from Marc Barreda (Bay Shore, N.Y.) before putting the set away on one of seven Lehman attack errors in the set.
 
The Dolphins hit an efficient .435 in the opening stanza and got five kills from Holiday on their way to opening the 1-0 lead. Skoblar posted four kills in the first set and Logan Dickover (Las Vegas, Nev.) handed out 12 assists.
 
Friday's second set featured three ties and a pair of lead changes in the early going, before Mount Saint Vincent took control of the middle frame with a 7-1 run that opened a 21-13 lead. Kochen put away two kills in that stretch, while Holiday posted a kill and a service ace. Skoblar would end the set and give the Mount a 2-0 lead with back-to-back kills for the final two points of the frame.
 
Mount Saint Vincent picked up its blocking game in the third frame on Friday, recording six of its eight total team blocks. James DiGiovanni (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Kevin Magee (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) each posted three block assists in the set.
 
The Dolphins built a 16-9 lead in the third frame on Friday, but saw Lehman run off an 8-1 stretch that knotted the score at 17-17. The score would be tied two more times late in the set, before the Dolphins scored five of the final eight points to secure the win. Barreda, Holiday and Kochen all picked up kills for the Mount down the stretch in the third.
 
Holiday closed out the night with a team-high 11 kills, hitting .714 in 14 total attacks. He added an ace, five digs and three total blocks to the winning effort. Kochen rounded out the match with 10 winners and three digs for the Dolphins.
 
Skoblar put away nine kills on Friday in the win, hitting .375 on the night to go along with an ace, three digs and three blocks. Barreda picked up seven winners for the Dolphins and lifted four digs.
 
Dickover finished the night with a career-high 24 assists in his third collegiate match and DiGiovanni handed out 12 assists in the third set and picked up three block assists. Sophomore T.J. Barczik (Lake Grove, N.Y.) led the Mount with nine digs.
 
Lehman was led by a match-high 13 kills from Jalil Lino and received a match-high 10 digs from Jose Bautista.
 
Overall, Mount Saint Vincent held 38-25 advantage in kills on the night and hit .305 as a team. Service aces in the match were even at two, with Mount Saint Vincent holding an 8-2 advantage in total team blocks.
 
With Friday's win, Mount Saint Vincent stands at 2-1 overall on the season. Next up for the Dolphins is a non-conference match with York on February 4. Match time at the Peter Jay Sharp Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
