Bronxville, N.Y. – After dropping game one of Sunday's doubleheader with Sage by a score of 3-1, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team rallied for a 2-1 win in nine innings in game two to gain a split with the Gators. Sophomore
Joann Guerra (Bronx, N.Y.) delivered the game winning RBI with a two-out single in the ninth.
Sage picked up the win in the opener, scoring three unearned runs after taking advantage of four Mount Saint Vincent errors. Katie Kovage pushed across the first run of the game in the top of the first after reaching on a Dolphin miscue with two outs in the inning.
The Dolphins came back to tie the score at 1-1 in the second inning after
Mackenzie Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.) and
Brittany Lee (Newton, N.J.) singled to start the inning.
Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) delivered Lee with the equalizing run with a run scoring groundout.
The game remained tied until the fifth inning when Sage picked up two more unearned runs after the Mount committed three errors in the inning. Hillary Faas drove home the deciding runs with a two-out single in the inning.
Mount Saint Vincent out hit Sage in the opener 6-5 with
Danielle Maffei (Valhalla, N.Y.), Lee and Heizer all recording two hits. Lee doubled and scored the Mount's run and also picked up a stolen base in the game.
Five different players recorded a hit for the Gators in game one, with Faas going 1-for-3 with two RBI. Meghan Roullier scored two runs for Sage in the opener.
Davis suffered the hard luck loss for Mount Saint Vincent, finishing her seventh complete game of the season. She fell to 5-2 on the season after working 7.0 innings without allowing an earned run and striking out four. Kovage picked up the win, allowing one run on six hits.
In game two, the two teams played scoreless softball until the fourth inning when Sage broke through with the game's first run. After Faas doubled with one out in the inning, she crossed with the Gators' only run after Kovage singled her home.
Mount Saint Vincent answered the Sage run in the home half of the sixth inning when Lee connected on her second home run of the season with two outs in the inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams would put runners on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings until the Dolphins finally broke through to secure the victory. Rianna Laughride (Vacaville, Calif.) led off the ninth with a single and moved to second on a
Kierstyn Bourdeau (Cheshire, Conn.) bunt single. After a sacrifice bunt from
Leeann Cerbone (Bronx, N.Y.) and a line out from Maffei, Guerra ripped a two out single to score Laughride with the deciding run.
Lee and Heizer each posted two hits in game two, with Lee recording a double and a home run for the Dolphins. Guerra finished 1-for-5 with the game winning RBI, while Laughride wrapped up game two 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Heizer picked up her seventh win of the season and moved to 7-2 with her team leading eighth complete game. She allowed one run on five hits, while striking out 10 for the Dolphins.
With the split on Sunday, Mount Saint Vincent went 2-2 in four league contests this weekend and stands at 15-4 overall and at 5-4 in conference play. The Dolphins will be back in action on Monday evening when they travel to Staten Island. The non-conference twinbill is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
