Newburgh, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a 6-1 win at Mount Saint Mary in game one and then had the streak snapped with a 1-0 loss to the Knights in game two on Saturday afternoon.
Kathryn Dalton (Northampton, Pa.) drove in three runs in game one and freshman
Mackenzie Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.) struck out 14 batters in game two.
Mount Saint Vincent broke a scoreless tie in the opener in the third inning with three runs on four hits.
Joann Guerra (Bronx, N.Y.) drove in
Leeann Cerbone (Bronx, N.Y.) with the game's first run before Dalton delivered
Danielle Maffei (Valhalla, N.Y.) with a single. Guerra later scored the inning's third run on a wild pitch to close out the scoring in the frame.
After Ashley Peel led off the home half of the third with a home run, the Dolphins answered with a run scoring single from Guerra in the fourth inning to move the advantage to 4-1. The Mount would close out the scoring in the sixth with a two-run single from Dalton that delivered Cerbone and
Rianna Laughridge (Vacaville, Calif.).
Maffei finished game one 3-for-5 with a double and a run out of the leadoff spot with Guerra and Dalton each going 2-for-4. Guerra scored a run and drove in two with Dalton pushing across three runs. Cerbone went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the opener.
Junior
Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) picked up the game one win in the circle, pushing her record to 5-1 on the season. She struck out 10 Mount Saint Mary batters in the game, reaching double figures in strike outs for the third straight game and fourth time this season. She allowed the one run on six hits in her seventh start of the season.
In game two, the two teams would be held off the board until the sixth inning when the Knights' Danielle Soto delivered the game's only run with a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning. Soto was one of five Mount Saint Mary players with a hit in game two.
After falling behind late in game two, Mount Saint Vincent would get the tying run to scoring position in the seventh with a Laughridge single and walk from Cerbone, but would strand the tying and go ahead runs in its final at-bat.
Laughridge closed game two 2-for-3 with a double with Davis,
Kierstyn Bourdeau (Cheshire, Conn.) and Cerbone also recording base hits. Guerra and Cerbone each collected a stolen base in the game for the Dolphins.
