Frankford Twp., N.J. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team lost its second straight conference doubleheader on Sunday, falling to Maritime by scores of 5-3 and 8-2. Senior
Mike Esposito (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) doubled in both ends of the set for the Dolphins.
Mount Saint Vincent fell behind by two runs early in the opener after the Privateers got run scoring singles from Nick Galli and Brian McLaughlin in their first at-bat. Galli drove home Tom Bauer who led the game off with a walk and later scored on McLaughlin's single to left center.
Maritime went on to extend its lead to five runs in the fourth inning with three unearned runs. Bauer was in the middle of the rally again for the Privateers with an RBI single to right field with two outs in the inning.
After being held to just one hit over the first six innings, Mount Saint Vincent put together two hits and broke through with its first run of the game in the seventh.
Chris Sideli (Brooklyn, N.Y.) singled to center field to lead off the inning and later scored on Esposito's run scoring double to left center field.
The Dolphins would get two more runs on four hits in the eighth and had the tying runs on base in the inning.
Nicholas Pace (Cranford, N.J.) led off the inning with a bunt single and later scored after
Robert Drake (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled and was cut down at second. After
Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) singled and stole second he was driven in by
Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) to cut the Mount's deficit to 5-3 before Sideli wrapped into an inning ending double play.
After plating runs in the seventh and eighth innings, the Dolphins were retired in order in the ninth by Ryan Alsdorf who picked up his first save of the season.
Seven different Mount Saint Vincent players finished the opener with a hit, with Esposito picking up the team's only extra base hit of the game. Pace, Sharpe and Sideli scored the Mount's runs with Rivera and Esposito driving in the Dolphins' runs.
Matthew Sollin and Galli each recorded two hits for Maritime with Galli recording a run scored and an RBI. Bauer closed game one with a hit, a run scored and a pair of walks.
Joseph Crosser (Cutchogue, N.Y.) took the loss on the mound for the Mount and fell to 0-2 on the season. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings of work.
Evan Brown (St. Albans, N.Y.) came on to work the final 2.1 innings, recording one strikeout.
The Privateers struck quickly again in game two, pushing across three runs before the Dolphins came to bat. Albert Doerbeck knocked in two runs with a single and Joe Longo pushed across the third run with a single through the left side.
Mount Saint Vincent answered with a run of its own in the first inning after
Craig Weber (Mineola, N.Y.) singled and Drake reached on an error. Weber would later score the Dolphins' first run of the game on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Maritime added two more runs in the third frame to push in front 5-1 before the Mount got back on the board in the fourth with its second run of the contest. Paul Woodburn and Pat Kirk drove in runs with singles for the visitors with Esposito delivering
Leutrim 'Tim' Hoxha (Forest Hills, N.Y.) with his second RBI double of the day.
With the game standing at 5-3 heading into the seventh inning, Maritime broke the contest open with three more runs in its final at-bat. Bruce Tyler and Kirk drove in runs on squeeze plays and Bauer singled down the right field line to score Tyler with the game's final run.
Weber finished game two 2-for-4 with a double and a run for the Dolphins with Esposito going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Michael Kuczinski (Millstone Twp., N.J.) suffered the loss for Mount Saint Vincent, while
Sean Kanganis (Somers, N.Y.) worked 3.1 scoreless innings of relief. Nick Sarna picked up the win for Maritime and moved to 3-1, allowing one earned run in 5.1 innings.
Sunday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 8-13 overall and to 3-4 in league play. The Dolphins will be back in action on Monday night when they take on Farmingdale State. The single game with the Rams will be played at Skylands Park in Frankford Twp., N.J. at 7:30 p.m.
