Dolphins Top Knights, Clinch Berth In Skyline Conference Tournament

Riverdale, N.Y. – Seniors Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Chris Sideli (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each drove in three runs and classmate Brian Rush (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) worked 8.0 innings on the mound as the College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team earned a berth in the Skyline Conference Tournament with an impressive 12-2 win over Mount Saint Mary on Sunday afternoon.
 
Mount Saint Vincent scored in seven of its eight at-bats on Sunday, plating seven runs in its final three at-bats. Sharpe got the scoring started when he drove in Nicholas Pace (Cranford, N.J.), who doubled to leadoff the first inning, with a groundout to second base.
 
The Dolphins would add a second run in the third inning when Sharpe singled to center to deliver Pace, before the Mount strung together three hits in the fourth on its way to two more runs and a 4-0 lead. Leutrim 'Tim' Hoxha (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and Keith Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.) singled to put two runners on with one out before Sideli singled to right field to plate both runners.
 
The Knights would slice their deficit in half on a two-run single from Chris Chieffo in the fifth, but the Dolphins answered with a run in the home half of the inning on a Mike Esposito (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) single that scored Sharpe. Sideli and Craig Weber (Mineola, N.Y.) added RBI singles in the sixth before Esposito and Robert Drake (Staten Island, N.Y.) plated runs with base hits in the seventh.
 
Mount Saint Vincent would close out the scoring in the home half of the eighth inning, putting together four hits in the inning. Pace walked to start the frame and later scored on a double off the bat of Weber. Weber later scored on a single from Sharpe who crossed on a run scoring single from Hoxha with one out in the inning.
 
Mount Saint Vincent outhit Mount Saint Mary in the game 17-5 with each player in the starting lineup each recording at least one hit. Sharpe closed out the game 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored and three RBI. Sideli finished up 2-for-4 with a run and three runs batted in.

After going 6-for-8 in Saturday's doubleheader against NYU-POLY, Pace picked up two more hits on Sunday, including a double, and scored three times. Weber, Esposito, Hoxha and Drake all recorded two hits for the Dolphins with Weber and Esposito each driving in a pair of runs.
 
Rush picked up his second win of the season against Mount Saint Mary and moved to 5-3 on the season with his 8.0 inning outing on Sunday. He allowed two earned runs on five hits, striking out five. He lowered his earned run average to 2.86 on the season.
 
Sunday's victory closes out the regular season for Mount Saint Vincent with a 15-17 overall record and an 8-8 mark in league play. Next up for the Dolphins is a first round match-up in the Skyline Conference Tournament at Farmingdale State. Game time for Wednesday has yet to be determined.
