Frankford Twp., N.J. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team took two key Skyline Conference games from visiting NYU-POLY on Saturday afternoon, downing the Jays by scores of 17-6 and 13-2. Junior
Nicholas Pace (Cranford, N.J.) had a big day for the Mount, collecting six hits, scoring six runs and driving in six runs over the two games.
Mount Saint Vincent put Saturday's opener away early with nine runs in its first at-bat and five more in its second. Pace singled and swiped home as part of double steal in the first and later drove home a pair of runs with a double in his second at-bat of the first frame.
Mike Esposito (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) also delivered a two-run double in the big first inning.
After NYU-POLY got a run in the second, the Dolphins struck five more times to open a 14-1 lead. Pace ripped his second two-run double in as many innings in the second with
Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) driving home Pace and
Keith Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.) with a double to close out the scoring in the frame.
Pace hit his third double of the game in the fifth to push across
Tyler Rieth (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and after the Jays plated four runs in the sixth, the Dolphins closed out the scoring with two more runs in the home half of the inning. Rieth knocked in
Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) with a sacrifice fly and
Robert Drake (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored the final run after stealing third and advancing on a throwing error.
The Dolphins had 10 different players with a hit in game one, led by a 4-for-5 effort from Pace. He finished with three doubles and five RBI and also stole a base. Sharpe and
Chris Sideli (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each finished with two hits with Sideli scoring a pair of runs. Schroeher scored three times in the opener with Sharpe driving in three runs.
Joseph Crosser (Cutchogue, N.Y.) earned his first win in a Mount Saint Vincent uniform with 5.2 innings of work. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits and struck out six. Senior
Zahedi Castillo (Bronx, N.Y.) came on to work the final 1.1 innings, picking up one strikeout.
After NYU-POLY struck first in game two with a run in the top of the first inning, the Dolphins evened the score when Sharpe drove home Pace with a run scoring single with one out in the home half of the first.
The Dolphins would score in five of its six at-bats in game two, breaking the game open with five runs in the second. Drake.) and Pace each picked up run scoring base hits in the second inning for the Dolphins.
The Mount would plate two more runs in the fourth capped by RBI singles from Rivera and Esposito and a single run in the fifth when Schroeher scored on a balk. Mount Saint Vincent closed out the scoring with four tallies in the sixth inning. Sideli had the big hit in the sixth inning rally, driving in
Leutrim 'Tim' Hoxha (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and
Casey Surdi (West Babylon, N.Y.) with a double.
The Dolphins showed seven players with two hits in game two, including Pace who finished up 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.
Craig Weber (Mineola, N.Y.) and Sideli both posted two hits and scored twice with Sideli and Drake each driving in two runs. Pace and Sharpe both stole a pair of bases for Mount Saint Vincent in the game.
Daniel DiLascio (Yonkers, N.Y.) picked up the complete game win for Mount Saint Vincent and moved to 2-1 on the season. He gave up two earned runs on four hits and struck out seven. He joins
Brian Rush (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) as the only Mount Saint Vincent pitchers with more than one victory on the season.
With the sweep on Saturday, Mount Saint Vincent moves to 14-17 overall on the season and to 7-8 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will square off with Mount Saint Mary on Sunday afternoon to close out league play. The winner of the tilt with claim the final seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament. First pitch with the Knights is set for 12:00 p.m. at Van Cortlandt Park.
