Dolphins Offense Surges Past Rams For Sunday Sweep

Purchase, NY - Fresh off a win over NJCU on Thursday, the University of Mount Saint Vincent returned to the diamond, this time back in Skyline Conference action against Farmingdale State College. The Dolphins offense was a key factor behind each victory, as UMSV swept the Rams by the scores of 14-5 and 12-11.

The Dolphins improved their conference record to 4-2 while sitting at 6-11 overall.

After a 1-1 score heading into the second inning, the offensive broke out with a four run second inning. The Dolphins took advantage of the Rams' defensive blunders, first with Will Granata reaching on an error to bring home Michael Akalski, then Granata, Zach Turko and Tyler Margolis all moving up one base on a wild pitch. Catcher John Anthony Spanoudakis singled to bring home Turko, with the four run also crossing the plate due to a wild pitch.

The game would be tied twice, both in the top of the third and then heading into the bottom of the sixth. But it was then when UMSV would once again excel, as the team would score eight runs at that point. Spanoudakis and Stephen Marinez would both score on wild pitches to kick things off, and Akalski's two RBI single up the middle would keep the momentum in the Dolphins favor. Evan Dutzer would then put the final stamp on the win with a three run home run, the first of his career.

The Dolphins bullpen was also a major force behind the win. Gavin Weinstock, Michael Iocco and Joseph Santos would combine to throw in the final four innings and allow just three total baserunners and no runs.

Both the Dolphins and Rams would trade leads in the second leg of the double header, but UMSV once again broke out in one inning. Trailing 5-2 in the fifth, Andrew Farina kicked things off with a solo shot to left to make it a two run ball game. After Turko reached base, Granata would triple him home, and would then score on a wild pitch to tie things up. Kyle Brindisi and Pablo Austin would each record RBI singles to cap off the inning.

The Dolphins would trail by one both in the seventh and eighth innings and would charge back both times. Austin drove home Marinez with a sacrifice fly and Brindisi would score on an error in the seventh, which was followed up by a pair of runs from Marinez and Austin to secure the sweep.

Iocco, Weinstock, Gerjuan Tyus and Ryan Sharkey would find success out of the bullpen and help stifle the Rams offense.

UMSV returns to non-conference action on Tuesday with a single against Drew.
