Bronxville, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team swept a Skyline Conference doubleheader over Purchase on Saturday afternoon by scores of 3-2 and 9-0. Junior
Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) struck out 11 batters in the game one win and
Rianna Laughridge (Vacaville, Calif.) hit a three-run home run in game two.
After falling behind 2-0 in the opener, Mount Saint Vincent scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth for the come-from-behind victory.
Joann Guerra (Bronx, N.Y.) got the Dolphins on the board in the third with a run scoring single before freshman
Mackenzie Heizer (Vacaville, Calif.) tied the score at 2-2 with a solo home run in the fourth.
With the score tied 2-2 in the fifth, the Dolphins scored the eventual game winning run on a Purchase miscue.
Kathryn Dalton (Northampton, Pa.) reached on an error that allowed
Danielle Maffei (Valhalla, N.Y.) to cross with two outs in the inning.
Mount Saint Vincent outhit Purchase 6-5 in game one with Maffei, Guerra, Dalton, Heizer, Kierstym Bourdeau (Cheshire, Conn.) and
Leeann Cerbone (Bronx, N.Y.) all picking up safeties. Maffei, Heizer and Bourdeau all scored runs and Maffei stole a base in the opening victory.
Davis picked up the win and moved to 7-2 on the season with the complete game win. She lowered her earned run average to 1.81 in the win in which she allowed two unearned runs on five hits. Her 11 strikeouts mark the fifth time she has reached double figures this season.
In game two, five of the Mount's nine hits in the game went for extra bases. The Dolphins broke the game open early with a run scoring triple from Guerra that delivered Maffei and added two more runs in the inning on a one out two-run home run off the bat of
Brittany Lee (Newton, N.J.).
Guerra was in the middle of a third inning rally when she drove in Maffei with a double before the Dolphins slugged a pair of home runs in a five run fifth inning. Dalton delivered two runs with a two-run blast for the Mount and Laughridge closed out the scoring with a three-run home run, pushing across Heizer and Lee.
Guerra closed out game-two 3-for-3 with two extra base hits, two runs and two RBI. Maffei rounded out the contest 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Dalton and Lee finished with two RBI each and Laughridge scored a run and drove in three.
Heizer collected her team leading ninth win of the season in game two finishing off her 10
th complete game of the season. She allowed three hits in her fourth shutout of the season and struck out eight.
Saturday's sweep pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 19-4 overall on the season and to 9-4 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will look to extend a five game winning streak on April 15 when they travel to John Jay. First pitch with the Bloodhounds is set for 3:00 p.m.
