Purchase, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team fell twice on Sunday afternoon at Purchase, losing game one by a score of 7-0 and dropping game two 4-3.
Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) doubled in game one for the Dolphins and
Joseph Crosser (Cutchogue, N.Y.) worked a complete game for the Mount in game two.
Mount Saint Vincent was held to just four hits in Sunday's opener, while Purchase pounded out 12 safeties, including three doubles. The Panthers scored single runs in the first, second, fifth and eighth innings and put three runs on the board in the fourth.
The Panthers plated the eventual game winning run in their first at-bat on Sunday when Ronald Echavarria doubled with two outs to plate Michael Piekarczyk for the early 1-0 lead. Purchase would extend the lead to 2-0 in the second on an infield single from Aryn Giddens that pushed across Jay Ruiz with two outs.
Purchase would break the game open with three runs on three hits in the fourth inning to move in front 5-0. Teofilo Ramirez scored on a bunt single from Michael Sarni to open the scoring in the inning and Michael Skoller followed with a two run single to plate Sarni and Giddens.
Mount Saint Vincent never had more than two base runners in an inning in game one and had four different players with one hit. Rivera finished 1-for-4 with a double and
Keith Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.),
Craig Weber (Mineola, N.Y.) and
Tyler Krolikowski (Massapequa, N.Y.) all singled in the game.
Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Krolikowski each walked and were hit with a pitch in the contest.
Skoller wrapped up game one 4-for-5 for Purchase with a run and two RBI with Piekarczyk going 2-for-4 with a run. Skoller, Echavarria and Ramirez all picked up doubles for the Panthers.
Freshman
Robert Negron (Bronx, N.Y.) took the loss for Mount Saint Vincent after allowing five earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work. Adam Brant earned the win for Purchase after working 7.0 shutout innings and allowing just two hits.
Purchase jumped out to another early lead in game two on Sunday with two tallies in the home half of the second inning. Dan Lombardo singled home Elan Trischitta with one out in the inning and then later scored the second run of the inning on a double steal.
Mount Saint Vincent would get on the board for the first time on the day in the third inning when it tied the score at 2-2. The inning was set up by a single from
Steven Giustino (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) and a double from Schroeher, putting runners on second and third with one out. Giustino crossed with the first run on a wild pitch and Schroeher later scored to tie the game on an RBI groundout from
Nicholas Pace (Cranford, N.J.).
Purchase jumped back in front with two runs in the home half of the inning on a pair of run scoring groundouts from Skoller and Piekarczyk. The Dolphins would cut into the lead in their last at-bat after loading the bases with no one out, but would stand the tying run at third base.
Trailing by two the Mount put three runners on when
Mike Esposito (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) and Giustino were hit with pitches and
Tyler Rieth (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) singled to right.
Leutrim 'Tim' Hoxha (Forest Hills, N.Y.) hit into a double play, forcing one run home, but a groundout left Weber at third as the tying run to end the game.
The Dolphins outhit Purchase 5-4 in the second game. Schroeher finished 1-for-4 with a double and a run and Giustino went 1-for-1, getting hit twice, and scored a run. Pace picked up Mount Saint Vincent's only RBI in the game.
Crosser took the hard luck loss for Mount Saint Vincent after working his first career complete game as a Dolphin. He allowed four runs on four hits in the game, striking out six and did not surrender a walk.
Sunday's sweep drops Mount Saint Vincent's overall record to 9-16 and its league mark to 4-7. The Dolphins will take the field again on Tuesday when they head to Massachusetts to take on Fisher. First pitch in Lynn, Mass. Is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
