Union, N.J. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team suffered its second conference loss of the season on Wednesday night with a 13-25, 21-25, 11-25 road loss at #13 Kean. Freshmen
Tyler Cucullu (Henderson, Nev.) and
Jacob Johnson (Henderson, Nev.) led the offensive attack with seven kills apiece.
Mount Saint Vincent did not hold the lead in the first set on Wednesday, but jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the middle frame keyed by kills from
Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) and Cucullu. Kean responded with five straight points and seven of the next eight to move in front 10-6.
The Dolphins rallied to pull to within 19-18 in the late stages of the set with a 5-2 spurt and would cut the disadvantage to a single point two more times in the set but could not pull even. Over the initial run Cucullu recorded a service ace for the Dolphins and
Timothy Kolodny (Woodland Hills, Calif.) put away a kill.
The Mount would take an early 1-0 lead in the third set on a
James DiGiovanni (Bay Shore, N.Y.) service ace, but saw Kean used a 13-4 run to take the lead for good in the match. The Dolphins scored back-to-back points just once in the third set, on a kill from Johnson and an attack error from Kean.
Cucullu and Johnson combined for 14 of the team's 21 kills in the match with Cucullu adding three service aces and a pair of total blocks. Holiday posted three kills and two blocks for Mount Saint Vincent.
Kolodny rounded out the match with a team-high five digs to go along with a pair of kills. DiGiovanni recorded 19 assists for the Dolphins and added ace and a kill in the match.
Ed Jedziniak led the Cougars with seven kills and chipped in with four total blocks. Ron Dunn handed out 23 assists and posted fiver service aces and Tommy Rosario put away four kills and recorded 11 block assists.
Kean finished the match with a 26-21 edge in kills and an 11-4 advantage in service aces. Kean dominated the blocking battle on Wednesday, finishing with a 15.5-3.0 advantage in total team blocks.
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 9-6 overall on the season and to 5-2 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will return to play with non-conference matches against Medgar Evers, Cazenovia and SUNYIT on Saturday at the Peter Jay Sharp Center. Matches are set to get underway at 11:30 a.m.
