Bronxville, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team picked up its first win of the season on Friday night with a 25-7, 25-11, 25-17 road win at Sarah Lawrence. The Mount hit .309 as a team in the match and was led by nine kills from Jacob Johnson (Henderson, Nev.).
 
After hitting -.009 as a team in the season opener against Albertus Magnus, Mount Saint Vincent rebounded to pick up 30 kills and commit just 13 attack errors against the Gryphons on Friday. The Dolphins trailed only once in the match, when Sarah Lawrence scored three of the first five points in the third set. The Dolphins rallied with an 8-2 run to move in front 10-6 and take the lead for good in the stanza.
 
The Dolphins got off to a fast start in the opening frame after scoring the first seven points of the set. Sarah Lawrence did not record a kill in the first set and hit -.333 as a team. The Dolphins took a commanding two set lead in the second after hitting a blistering .750. The Mount recorded 12 kills in the frame in 16 attacks and did not commit an attack error.
 
Johnson continued the strong start to his rookie season on Friday with nine winners and a .294 hitting percentage. He added four aces and a total block to the winning effort. Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) added seven winners and hit .400 for the Dolphins in the victory.
 
Freshman Tyler Cucullu (Henderson, Nev.) led everyone in the match with eight service aces to go along with four kills, three digs and a block. Timothy Kolodny (Woodland Hills, Calif.) totaled seven aces for the Mount and lifted four digs.
 
Junior setter James DiGiovanni (Bay Shore, N.Y.) handed out a match-high 24 assists for the Dolphins and T.J. Barczik (Lake Grove, N.Y.) picked up five digs and chipped in with two aces and a pair of kills.
 
Overall for the match, Mount Saint Vincent held the advantage in kills 30-4 and service aces 22-1. The Dolphins had five players hit at least .300 in the match.
 
With Friday's triumph, Mount Saint Vincent evens its overall record at 1-1. The Dolphins will open Skyline Conference play on Monday night when it hosts Yeshiva. Match time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
