James DiGiovanni (Bay Shore, N.Y.), the College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team snapped a two match skid with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-17 non-conference win over John Jay on Tuesday night.
The two teams were even just nine times on the night and John Jay held just one lead, jumping out to an early 2-0 advantage in the second set. Tyler Cucullu (Henderson, Nev.) winner.
Mount Saint Vincent put away 16 kills in the second stanza on Tuesday and carried the momentum into the third frame when they jumped out to a 7-3 lead. After allowing the Bloodhounds to get to within 9-7, the Mount used a 4-2 spurt to grab a 13-8 lead and later put together a 6-1 run to take control of the set with a 21-13 advantage. In the late run Johnson produced a kill and a service ace for the Dolphins.
Johnson reached double-figures in kills for the seventh time this season and finished the match hitting .276 for the Dolphins on the night and added an ace and three digs to the victory. Cucullu recorded 10 kills for the Mount and finished a solid all-around night with nine digs, three total blocks and a pair of aces.
DiGiovanni closed the match with a season-high 39 assists for the Dolphins and lifted a team-high 13 digs to post his first double-double of the season. He was also one of five players with a total block in the match for the Mount.
T.J. Barczik (Lake Grove, N.Y.) posted 12 digs for the Mount and
Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) totaled seven kills and three total blocks.
John Jay was led by eight kills and 14 digs from Jack Pelleschi and got a match-high 15 digs from Yevgeniy Remennik. Nicholas Anderson finished with 14 assists and five digs for the Bloodhounds.
Overall in the contest, Mount Saint Vincent posted a 43-17 edge in kills and a 5-0 advantage in service aces. The Dolphins also collected five of the six total team blocks in the match.
With Tuesday's triumph, Mount Saint Vincent evens its home record on the season at 3-3 and moves to 6-4 overall. The Dolphins will return to Skyline Conference play on Saturday when they play host to league rivals NYU-POLY and NJCU. Matches at the Peter Jay Sharp Center will get underway at 11:30 a.m.
