Mount Saint Vincent Suffers Doubleheader Loss At Eastern Mennonite

Harrisonburg, Va. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team was back in action on Sunday afternoon and suffered two losses on the road at Eastern Mennonite by scores of 23-10 and 8-4. Senior Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) picked up four RBI for the Dolphins in the opener on Sunday.
 
Mount Saint Vincent took a 1-0 lead in game one in its first at-bat on Sunday when Rivera delivered Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) with a single in the first inning. After the Royals plated three runs in the home half of the inning, the Mount rallied to pull back even on a two-run single off the bat of Keith Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.). The Dolphins set up the inning with a lead-off double from Mike Esposito (Rockaway Park, N.Y.), a single from Steven Giustino (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) and a walk from Robert Drake (Staten Island, N.Y.).
 
Eastern Mennonite would answer once again in the home half of the second with seven runs and went on to add two in the third, four in the fifth and seven more in the sixth. The Dolphins would get a run in the fourth and four in the fifth before rounding out the scoring with two more in the seventh. Rivera drove in a pair in the four run sixth for the Mount with a single.
 
The two teams combined for 31 hits in the game and 13 errors, with the Royals accounting for 21 safeties. Eastern Mennonite had 14 different players with at least one hit in game one, including three hits each from Adam Posey and Kyle Mathews. Mathews and Ryan Hendrick each closed the contest with four RBI apiece.
 
Rivera closed out game one going 2-for-3 with his team-high four RBI. Joesph Senisi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI with Sharpe adding a double and two runs scored. Drake also scored twice in game one, adding a hit and two walks.
 
Austin Marzullo picked up the win for Eastern Mennonite after working 5.0 innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out four and walked only one. Michael Kuczinski (Millstone Township, N.J.) suffered the loss after allowing eight earned runs in 1.2 innings of work.
For the fourth time in as many outings on the young season, Mount Saint Vincent struck first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the top half of the second inning. Tyler Krolikowski (Massapequa, N.Y.) put runners on second and third with one out on a double to right center and freshman Casey Surdi (West Babylon, N.Y.) later drove him home on a groundout for the early 1-0 advantage.
 
Eastern Mennonite responded in the home half of the frame with five hits and four runs to pull in front for good in the game. Ryan McAlister drove home a pair of runs with a single to center with one out in the inning to close out the scoring in the frame.
 
The Dolphins would add a run in the third and two more in the fourth but would not be able to overcome a three run third from the Royals. Chris Sideli (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Nicholas Pace (Cranford, N.J.) both drove home a run with sacrifice flies and Schroeher plated Surdi in the fourth with a double down the right field line.
 
Posey had his second big game of the day for the Royals, going 4-for-4 with a double, run scored and RBI out of the leadoff spot. McAlister finished with two RBI and eight different players scored a run for the Royals.
 
Sharpe wrapped up game two on Sunday 2-for-3 with a run, while Surdi went 2-for-3, including a double, with a run and an RBI.    
 
Robert Negron (Bronx, N.Y.) took the loss in his first career start after allowing three earned runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings. He struck out two and walked three in his initial outing of the season. Ryan Tierney earned the victory for Eastern Mennonite after working 5.0 innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits.
 
Following Sunday's results, Mount Saint Vincent stands at 0-4 overall on the season. The Dolphins will continue an eight game road swing to open the season when they head to #3 Kean on March 2. First pitch with the Cougars is slated for 12:00 p.m.
