Mount Saint Vincent Suffers Setback At York

Brett Holiday posted eight total blocks on Thursday at York

Cucullu totals 13 kills, DiGiovanni hands out 24 assists

Jamaica, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team was dealt its second straight loss on Thursday night with a 23-25, 23-25, 20-25 loss on the road at York. Freshman Tyler Cucullu (Henderson, Nev.) led the team with 13 kills, while junior James DiGiovanni (Bay Shore, N.Y.) handed out 24 assists.
 
The Dolphins got off to a fast start in the first set on Thursday, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead over the Cardinals. Junior Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) sparked the opening run for the Dolphins with two kills with Cucullu adding a winner for the Mount.
 
Mount Saint Vincent would expand its lead to 9-2 in the first, but saw York score 11 of the final 14 points in the frame to slip past the Dolphins for a 1-0 lead in the match. The Cardinals used a 7-0 run to move in front 23-21 and took advantage of a Dolphin miscue to take the frame.
 
Thursday's second set featured eight ties and four lead changes and went back and forth until York used a quick 3-1 run to get in front 18-14. The Dolphins would get their deficit down to a single point six times late in the set, but could never pull even as the Cardinals moved out to a 2-0 lead.
 
After allowing a Holiday kill to open the third stanza, York ripped off the next nine points to jump out to an eight point advantage. The Dolphins would fall behind by as many as 11 points before using a 9-2 run to get back to within 21-17. Eight of the nine points came from York errors, with Timothy Kolodny (Woodland Hills, Calif.) adding a service ace.
 
The Dolphins would climb to within three points on another York error, but the Cardinals closed out the win three of the final four points in the set.
 
Cucullu posted a match-high 13 kills in the contest and led the team with seven digs. He also rounded out a strong night with four total blocks for the Dolphins. Holiday finished with eight total blocks for Mount Saint Vincent and added six kills.
 
DiGiovanni closed the night with four digs in addition to his assist total with Jacob Johnson (Henderson, Nev.) posting five digs and four kills. Johnson and Reginald Owens (Staten Island, N.Y.) each rounded out the night with a pair of blocks.
 
York got 10 kills each from Leszek Stankiewicz and Edner Geffrard with Stankiewwicz hitting an efficient .467 for the Cardinals. Avinash Thomas led all players in the contest with 32 assists and 11 digs.
 
Overall, York held the edge in kills 41-28 on Thursday and in service aces 3-2. Mount Saint Vincent recorded a season-high 11 blocks in the contest and won the blocking battle 11-4 on the night.
 
Thursday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 5-4 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back on the court on Tuesday when they play host to John Jay. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
