Mount Saint Vincent Downs Yeshiva In Straight Sets

Tyler Cucullu leads the nation in service aces per set

Johnson records 11 kills, Cucullu totals six aces

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team picked up its second straight win on Monday night with a 25-16, 25-16, 25-20 sweep of Yeshiva. Freshman Jacob Johnson (Henderson, Nev.) posted a career-high 11 kills and classmate Tyler Cucullu (Henderson, Nev.) totaled six service aces.
 
Mount Saint Vincent got out to a one set lead after trailing only briefly in the early going on Monday. The Maccabees took leads of 2-1 and 3-2 in the first set before the Dolphins rallied with a four point run to move ahead 6-3. Half of the points in the spurt came on Cucullu service aces.
 
The Dolphins would allow Yeshiva to climb to within a point after the run, but used another four point run to move ahead 14-6 and a three point spurt to close out the set. Timothy Kolodny (Woodland Hills, Calif.) recorded an ace in the four point run and a kill in the closing rally for the Dolphins.
 
After allowing the first point in the second set, Mount Saint Vincent scored the next five points to take the lead for good in the stanza. Kolodny led the way with a pair of service aces and Cucullu added a kill to get the Dolphins in front 5-1.
 
Mount Saint Vincent strung together six straight points to jump out to a 12-4 lead and closed with nine of the final 12 points to take a commanding two set lead on the night. The Mount posted seven kills and eight service aces in the second frame, led by four aces from Kolodny.
 
The Dolphins struggled to pull away from Yeshiva in the deciding set on Monday and found themselves down 18-13 after an attack error. Mount Saint Vincent rallied with five straight points, including another ace from Kolodny, to knot the score at 18-18.
 
Yeshiva would move back in front 19-18 on a service error, but the Dolphins closed the match with a 7-1 run to collect their second straight win. Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.), Cucullu and Johnson all chipped in with kills over the run.
 
Johnson was the only player to post double-figures in kills in the match with his 11. He hit .250 in the contest and added six digs. Kolodny added four kills, four digs and a match-high seven service aces to the winning effort.
 
Cucullu, who sits atop of the NCAA National Rankings in service aces per set, picked up six more aces on Monday and now has 17 on the season and is averaging 1.70 per set. He also finished with eight winners, hitting an even .500, and four digs.
 
Junior James DiGiovanni (Bay Shore, N.Y.) led all players with 25 assists on Monday and added four digs and freshman T.J. Barczik (Lake Grove, N.Y.) lifted a team-high eight digs.
 
Overall on the night, Mount Saint Vincent held the edge in kills 29-24 and service aces 14-2, while Yeshiva held a 5.5-2.0 edge in total team blocks.
 
With the victory, Mount Saint Vincent stands at 2-1 overall on the season and at 1-0 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Friday night when they play host to Fontbonne. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
